Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to eastern Australia. Grows in muddy and waterlogged soils along the margins of rivers and ponds.

Taxonomy & Genetics: Belongs to the Ranunculaceae family, genus Ranunculus. Commonly referred to as River Buttercup.

Physical Structure: Stoloniferous plant creeping along the substrate. From each node on the runner, palmately divided leaves grow on upright petioles.

Color & Texture: Bright light green color. Leaves are deeply lobed and star-like, resembling small open umbrellas.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Lighting & CO2: Requires high-intensity light and high CO2 levels. Under low light, the petioles grow too long and lose their compact look.

Nutrition & Substrate: Fertile substrate enriched with organic nutrients is highly recommended to support runner spreading. Root tabs are helpful.

Water Chemistry: Keep pH between 5.5 and 7.5, and water hardness low to moderate. Prefers cooler water temperatures (18-26°C).

Space Management & Placement: Best suited for the foreground or midground. Plant individual runner pieces spaced out to let them fill in over time.

Pruning: Trim the leaves that grow too tall by cutting their stalks near the substrate to promote lower, denser horizontal growth.

Risks & Diseases: Stems become leggy and weak under poor lighting. Can be choked out by algae or detritus accumulation on its fine leaves.
