Species description
The species Lindernia dubia is native to the wetlands, lake shores, and clayey ditches of North America, where it grows wild in constantly moist soils exposed to the sun. In its natural environment, it is typically found in slow-flowing or stagnant waters, such as swamps, ponds, and tropical riverbanks, where it adapts beautifully to seasonal water level variations. This habitat provides a rich organic substrate and consistent, filtered light exposure. The plant's ability to grow both submersed and emersed is a testament to its extraordinary evolutionary resilience in these humid ecosystems. From a taxonomic perspective, the plant belongs to the family Linderniaceae, genus Lindernia.
Care, breeding and tankmates
This species prefers temperatures between 15 and 28 °C, pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and water hardness from soft to medium. Regular water changes are recommended to maintain stable parameters and low levels of pollutants such as nitrates and phosphates. Good mechanical and biological filtration will ensure an environment free of suspended particles, which could settle on the leaves and limit photosynthesis. The main risks include loss of lower leaves if shaded by taller plants, and sensitivity to nutrient deficiencies. Under conditions of poor water movement or nutrient imbalance, the leaves can be colonized by filamentous or green spot algae.

It is well-suited for the midground or background depending on the size of the aquarium. Planting it in dense groups creates a beautiful, textured focal point. Its upright growth habit makes it an excellent choice for adding vertical interest.
Lindernia dubia features relatively thick stems with opposite, lanceolate leaves. The leaves are typically a bright, vibrant green, slightly serrated at the edges. Under high light, it may develop a slightly more compact and bushy appearance.
This plant has a moderate to fast growth rate when provided with optimal conditions. CO2 injection and high lighting will significantly boost its growth and branching. In less demanding setups, it grows steadily but requires less frequent maintenance.
Lindernia dubia is an adaptable stem plant that benefits significantly from a moderately enriched substrate to support its nutritional needs. Its root system requires a slightly compact yet breathable layer, such as fine gravel or aquarium soil, to anchor its delicate stems securely. A planting depth of at least 2 inches ensures the roots have adequate space to forage for essential minerals and trace elements. While it can survive in inert substrates, providing root tabs or a nutrient-dense base will result in stronger stems and healthier overall growth.
Liquid fertilization is effective for supplying its primary nutrient needs. Regular dosing of nitrogen and potassium prevents yellowing of older leaves. A complete trace element mix is also recommended to support overall metabolic processes.
While it draws nutrients from the water, it develops a strong root system in a nutrient-rich substrate. Using a quality soil or root tabs will enhance its growth and stability. A fertile base promotes thicker stems and larger leaf size.
Regular trimming is encouraged to maintain shape and promote a bushy structure. Cutting the top portions will induce lateral shoot development from the remaining stem. The trimmed tops can be replanted to easily expand your planting.
Propagation is simple and done through stem cuttings. Snip the stem and plant the top portion directly into the substrate. Both the cutting and the original stem will quickly resume growth.
It is relatively hardy but may melt if subjected to sudden changes in water parameters. Ensuring stable CO2 levels and avoiding extreme temperature fluctuations is advised. Algae can form on the leaves if flow is poor or nutrients are imbalanced.
It acts as a versatile midground bush or a solid background filler. Its bright color provides excellent contrast against dark woods or red plants. It fits well in both natural and meticulously structured layouts.
