Species description
The species Pogostemon sampsonii is native to the slow-flowing rivers and streams of southern China and northern Vietnam, growing in dense submerged or marshy beds. In its natural environment, it is typically found in slow-flowing or stagnant waters, such as swamps, ponds, and tropical riverbanks, where it adapts beautifully to seasonal water level variations. This habitat provides a rich organic substrate and consistent, filtered light exposure. The plant's ability to grow both submersed and emersed is a testament to its extraordinary evolutionary resilience in these humid ecosystems. From a taxonomic perspective, the plant belongs to the family Lamiaceae, genus Pogostemon.
Care, breeding and tankmates
This species prefers soft to moderately hard water with pH between 6.0 and 7.5, KH 2-10, and temperature between 20 and 28 °C. Regular water changes are recommended to maintain stable parameters and low levels of pollutants such as nitrates and phosphates. Good mechanical and biological filtration will ensure an environment free of suspended particles, which could settle on the leaves and limit photosynthesis. The main risks include sensitivity during the early stages of acclimation with potential leaf melt, and root rot in anaerobic substrates. Under conditions of poor water movement or nutrient imbalance, the leaves can be colonized by filamentous or green spot algae.

Best placed in the midground or background depending on the aquarium size. Its unique leaf shape makes it an excellent focal point. Plant in small groups to create an attractive, textured bush.
A stem plant featuring distinctively shaped, light green leaves with serrated margins. The leaves grow in opposite pairs along the stem. It has a slightly more rigid and structured appearance compared to other stem plants.
The growth rate is moderate when provided with CO2 and good lighting. It is not as fast-growing as some other Pogostemon species, making maintenance somewhat easier. Without CO2, growth is quite slow.
Pogostemon sampsonii flourishes when rooted in a high-quality aqua soil capable of meeting its significant nutrient demands. The plant forms sturdy basal roots that anchor it well against moderate water flow while absorbing essential elements to promote its characteristic leaf coloration. A fine-to-medium grade substrate with a minimum depth of 4 centimeters allows for effortless planting and supports the development of a healthy and active root system.
Benefits from regular water column fertilization. A complete liquid fertilizer will support steady growth and prevent nutrient deficiencies. Ensuring adequate potassium helps prevent pinholes in older leaves.
A nutrient-rich substrate is highly recommended. It develops a good root system that benefits from aqua soil or root tabs. Root feeding contributes significantly to the overall thickness of the stems.
Trim by cutting the stem above a leaf node. The remaining portion will sprout side shoots, leading to a bushier plant. Replant the cut tops to propagate.
Easily propagated through stem cuttings. Snip a healthy shoot and plant it directly into the substrate. The cutting will root and establish itself within a week.
Can be sensitive to significant shading, which leads to lower leaf loss. Prefers clean water and good circulation to keep its leaves free of algae. Tolerates moderate lighting but thrives under high light.
Serves as a great midground bush or background accent. The serrated leaf edges provide excellent textural contrast. It fits well into nature aquariums and Dutch style layouts.
