Species description

Originating from the subtropical and tropical regions of South America, particularly areas of southern Brazil such as Santa Catarina, from which its varietal name is derived. This plant thrives in slow-moving or stagnant waters of rivers, lakes, and ponds, often forming dense colonies both submerged and emergent. In its natural habitat, it exhibits remarkable adaptability to various aquatic conditions, flourishing in nutrient-rich and well-lit environments. Its presence in these ecosystems contributes significantly to natural filtration and provides refuge for numerous aquatic species, highlighting its ecological importance. Myriophyllum aquaticum var.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Myriophyllum aquaticum var. santacatarinense is remarkably tolerant of a wide range of water chemical parameters, thriving in temperatures between 5.0 and 30.0 C, pH from 5.0 to 8.0, and KH from 2.0 to 21.0. This broad flexibility makes it suitable for various aquarium setups, from soft and acidic biotopes to harder and more alkaline environments, demonstrating its high adaptability. However, stable conditions are always preferable to avoid unnecessary plant stress, promoting consistent and vigorous growth while minimizing the risk of health issues. Although inherently robust, avoiding extreme and rapid fluctuations in these parameters is key to maintaining its optimal health and preserving its beautiful appearance in the long term.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Extra-Amazon South America

Plant profile

Placement
Midground

This robust variant is perfectly suited for the background of most aquariums. Its tendency to form thick bushes makes it ideal for covering aquarium equipment or creating a dense green wall. In shallower setups, it can be grown emerged or trailing along the surface.

Botanical form
Stem

The plant features sturdy stems with whorls of finely divided, pinnate leaves. The santacatarinense variety often has slightly stiffer or more densely packed leaves under strong light. It maintains a purely green coloration without significant red hues.

Growth
very-fast

It exhibits a very rapid growth rate, comparable to standard Parrot's Feather. Under high light and CO2, it will require weekly maintenance to keep its size in check. Its fast growth makes it highly effective at outcompeting algae for nutrients.

Substrate
Medium
Column fertilization
Recommended

Liquid fertilization is the primary and most effective method for feeding this plant. The extensive surface area of its feathery leaves allows it to rapidly absorb nutrients from the water. A comprehensive all-in-one fertilizer will sustain its rapid growth.

Root fertilization
None

A nutrient-rich substrate provides a secondary source of nourishment that benefits the plant over the long term. Root tabs can be added near the base to encourage deeper and stronger root systems. While not strictly necessary, good substrate supports overall plant vitality.

Trimming
Occasional

Trim the plant regularly by cutting the tops and replanting them in the substrate to maintain a lush appearance. The lower stems will quickly sprout new side branches, increasing the density of the group. Avoid letting it grow too thick, as this will shade out the lower leaves.

Propagation
Cuttings

Propagation is incredibly simple and is done by taking stem cuttings. Any portion of the stem with healthy leaves will quickly develop roots when planted in the substrate or left to float. It is a great plant for beginners looking to practice propagation.

Sensitivity
Moderate

It is a highly adaptable variety but can suffer from leaf drop if light levels are too low. It prefers clean water, so adequate filtration and flow are important to prevent debris from sticking to its fine leaves. Sudden drops in temperature may temporarily slow its growth.

Layout role
Midground, Background

This plant serves as a dominant background feature in planted tanks. Its bright green, fine-textured leaves create a beautiful contrast against darker hardscape or red plants. It is a staple in both Dutch and nature-style aquascapes for its reliability and visual softness.
