Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widely distributed in India, where it grows in wetlands, along riverbanks, and in seasonal marshes.
Taxonomy & Genetics: Belongs to the Araceae family, genus Cryptocoryne. The species name refers to the spiral shape of its inflorescence spathe.
Physical Structure: Rosette plant with an exceptionally deep and fibrous root system. Leaves are long, ribbon-like, and have slightly wavy margins.
Color & Texture: Features bright green to reddish-brown leaves depending on the variety and light levels, with a prominent central vein.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Lighting & CO2: Adapts well to low to moderate lighting. CO2 is not required for survival, but its supplementation will modestly accelerate growth.
Nutrition & Substrate: Demands a deep, nutrient-rich substrate (at least 5-8 cm). It is a heavy root feeder; root tabs are highly recommended.
Water Chemistry: Very adaptable. Prefers a pH between 5.0 and 8.0, and temperature between 23°C and 28°C. Thrives in moderate to hard water.
Space Management & Placement: Best suited as a background plant or midground in larger tanks. Plant with the crown kept slightly above the substrate.
Pruning: Trim old or decaying outer leaves by cutting them close to the base. This encourages new growth from the center of the rosette.
Risks & Diseases: Susceptible to 'Crypt Melt' (melting leaves) which occurs when water parameters change abruptly. Avoid moving it once established.
