Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to Espiritu Santo Island in the Vanuatu archipelago. Inhabits freshwater springs, slow-flowing mountain streams, and rivers with gravel or sandy beds.

Taxonomy: Member of the family Diogenidae. A small-sized species (about 2-3 cm). Has evolved unique physiological adaptations (advanced osmoregulation) allowing it to live strictly in fresh water.

Social Behavior: Peaceful, curious, and highly gregarious. Moves along the bottom of streams in large social groups to forage on leaf litter. Fully aquatic, it does not venture onto land.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body color is primarily brownish or dark olive-green. Walking legs display beige or orange bands, and claws are light-colored. No visible external sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Tank Setup: Requires a freshwater aquarium of 10 gallons or larger. Decorate with smooth gravel, driftwood, fine sand, and hardy plants. Empty freshwater gastropod shells (e.g. Physa, Planorbids) must be provided.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous scavenger and detritivore. Feeds on algae, decaying leaves, and microfauna. Accepts fish flakes, sinking pellets, spirulina, and blanched vegetables.

Water Quality: Freshwater setup. Keep pH slightly alkaline (7.2-8.0) and medium-high hardness to support proper shell calcification. Temperature 22-28°C. Good filtration is required.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Highly compatible with small, peaceful fish (e.g. Rasboras, Guppies) and freshwater snails. Avoid predatory fish or large crayfish. Do not place in marine setups.

Aquarium Breeding: Extremely difficult. While eggs hatch in fresh water, larval stages require specific planktonic conditions and are usually lost to standard filters.

Risks and Diseases: Decompensation if kept in soft, acidic water. High stress if suitable empty freshwater snail shells are unavailable. Highly sensitive to copper treatments.

Calcium and minerals
Essenziale calcio disciolto nell'acqua dolce (durezza GH/KH) per prevenire fallimenti della muta.
Molting
Effettua la muta sommerso nell'acqua dolce dell'acquario. Non disturbarlo fino all'indurimento dell'esoscheletro.
Reproduction
