Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Distributed along tropical coasts of the Indo-Pacific, from East Africa to Polynesian islands. Lives in supralittoral sandy beach zones, upper dunes, and coastal scrub forest.

Taxonomy: Member of the Sesarmidae family. Possesses a rounded, domed carapace compared to other sesarmids, with short walking legs and strong claws adapted for sand locomotion. Reaches 2-3 cm.

Social Behavior: Peaceful but can show territorial behavior if space is restricted. Exhibits an almost entirely terrestrial lifestyle, hiding under driftwood, dry leaves, and beach debris.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Carapace is light tan, beige, or greyish with dark brown marbling, offering excellent camouflage. Males have slightly larger claws and a narrow V-shaped abdomen.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Tank Setup: Requires a paludarium or humid terrarium with 90% land and 10% water. Silt-free sand mixed with coco-fiber is the best substrate. Provide leaf litter and bark for hiding spots.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous scavenger. Feeds on dry leaves, ripe fruits, vegetables, sinking fish tablets, and small dead insects. Ensure a highly varied diet.

Water Quality: Provide two shallow water dishes, one with freshwater and one with marine/brackish water. Water pH 7.2-8.0. Keeping air temperature at 22-28°C and humidity at 70-80% is critical.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Absolutely not suitable for standard aquariums. In a terrarium, they can live with other peaceful terrestrial invertebrates or conspecifics in a spacious setup.

Aquarium Breeding: Females carry eggs under their abdomen. The larvae must enter marine water to develop, which makes successful captive breeding nearly impossible in hobby setups.

Risks and Diseases: Low environmental humidity leads to failed molts and fatal dehydration. Highly sensitive to chemical treatments and copper.
