Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Coasts of West Africa, distributed from Senegal to Angola. Inhabits sandy burrows along coastal forests and mangrove swamps.
Taxonomy: Member of the family Gecarcinidae. Features a robust, thick, rounded body shape with unequal claws in adult males.
Social Behavior: Terrestrial and solitary. Spends most of its time on land digging deep burrows. Highly territorial and aggressive toward other crabs.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Stunning coloration: brilliant violet-blue carapace, bright red-orange legs, and contrasting white claws of uneven sizes.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Tank Setup: Requires a paludarium setup with 80% land and 20% shallow water. Provide deep substrate (sand/peat mix) for digging.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous detritivore. Consumes fresh fruits, vegetables, dried leaves, fish food, and freeze-dried shrimp or insects.
Water Quality: The shallow water area can be fresh or preferably brackish (SG 1.005-1.010). Maintain air and water temperatures at 22-28 °C.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Strictly solitary. Will attack and potentially kill other crabs, small reptiles, or slow-swimming fish in its water dish.
Aquarium Breeding: Reproduction in home setups is highly unlikely. Females carry eggs, releasing marine planktonic larvae that require specific salinity.
Risks and Diseases: Drowning risk if kept in deep water without an easy exit ramp. Strong climber; requires a heavy, secure screen cover.
