Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widely distributed across the Indo-Pacific, from the East African coast to Hawaii. Inhabits shallow lagoons, tidal pools, brackish estuaries, and mangrove swamps.

Taxonomy: Belongs to the family Palaemonidae. Features a slender, almost completely transparent body with a prominent serrated rostrum and long filiform antennae.

Social Behavior: Peaceful and gregarious. Prefers living in groups that continuously scan substrate and rocks for food. Active both during the day and night.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Glass-like, colorless body with faint brown or yellowish stripes. Adult females are slightly larger than males and carry eggs under their abdomen.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Tank Setup: Suitable for tanks of 10 gallons or larger. Prefers setups with plenty of macroalgae or plants and small rock crevices to hide in.

Diet and Feeding: Opportunistic omnivore and detritivore. Feeds on organic debris, algae, leftover fish food, and plankton. Easily accepts flakes, pellets, and frozen foods.

Water Quality: Very resilient. Temperature 20-28°C, pH 7.8-8.4. While it can adapt to freshwater with slow acclimation, it thrives best in brackish or marine salinity.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Peaceful with small, non-aggressive fish and corals. Avoid keeping with large predators or territorial species that would prey on them.

Aquarium Breeding: Females carry eggs under their abdomen. The larvae undergo a complex planktonic development, which is difficult to rear successfully in home tanks.

Risks and Diseases: Highly sensitive to copper-based treatments and rapid salinity changes. Vulnerable to predation during molting if adequate shelter is not provided.

Reproduction
Rilasciano larve plantoniche che difficilmente completano la metamorfosi in acquari di comunità.
