Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Found along the coast of the Northeastern Pacific, from southern Alaska to Baja California. Inhabits shallow intertidal zones, muddy estuaries, sheltered bays, and salt marshes.
Taxonomy: Classified under the family Varunidae. Features a smooth, sub-quadrate carapace and walking legs covered in fine, hair-like setae used to sense the environment.
Social Behavior: Semi-terrestrial and active burrower. It constructs burrows in mud banks or hides under rocks. Can show territorial behavior toward other crabs in tight spaces.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Pale yellow-green or grey with small dark spots. Claws are lighter in color. Males have a narrow abdomen, whereas females display a wider abdomen for egg incubation.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Tank Setup: Requires a cold-water marine or brackish setup. A paludarium-style tank with a terrestrial area of sand and gravel is highly recommended, as they enjoy spending time out of the water.
Diet and Feeding: Opportunistic omnivore and scavenger. Feeds on algae, diatoms, small invertebrates, organic detritus, and leftovers. Accepts sinking pellets and frozen foods.
Water Quality: Temperate species. Must be kept cool at 10-20°C (do not keep in warm tropical reef tanks). pH 7.8-8.4. Highly tolerant to fluctuations in salinity.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Unsuitable for tropical reef aquariums. Best kept with cold-water fish and invertebrates from the same geographic region. May catch small snails.
Aquarium Breeding: Females carry egg clutches under their abdomen. Planktonic larval stages are complex, making home aquarium breeding very challenging.
Risks and Diseases: Highly sensitive to copper. Requires trace iodine for successful molting. High escape risk if the aquarium is not tightly covered.

- Calcium and minerals
- Compatibility & tankmates
- Non compatibile con acquari tropicali di barriera. Evitare la convivenza con piccoli molluschi vulnerabili.
