Mickey Mouse Platy

Xiphophorus maculatus var. Mickey Mouse

The Mickey Mouse Platy is the idol of children aquarists. It features a black spot at the base of the tail identical to the Mickey Mouse logo (one large circle and two small ones). The body is often golden or reddish. Like all Platys, it is a formidable and intrusive fish, but its popularity often leads to a tragic end. Sold to families for children's plastic micro-aquariums (the classic 20 liters), the Platy soon turns into a polluting factory. Giving birth to 30 fry a month, the child's small tank will become a deadly toxic swamp in a few weeks.

Description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Highly popular ornamental breeding variety (Central America the origin of the strain).

Taxonomy and Morphology: Mickey Mouse Platy (Xiphophorus maculatus). Classic platy body, short and robust.

Social Behavior: Peaceful, curious and tireless but never aggressive.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The Mark (Mickey Mouse). Regardless of the base color (yellow, red, blue), this variant features a large circular black spot at the base of the tail flanked by two smaller spots above and below, perfectly forming the iconic Mickey Mouse head. Males with gonopodium.

Care and observations

Aquarium Setup: Basic aquarium (60 cm / 24 inches). Many aquatic plants (including floating ones) to provide shelter for both adults and future fry.

Diet and Feeding: Accommodating omnivore (eats everything, preferring vegetable matter).

Water Quality: Prefers dechlorinated tap water (hard and alkaline). Suffers terribly in soft osmotic water.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Excellent community fish (with Danios, Corydoras, Tetras).

Aquarium Reproduction: Serial breeders. The Mickey Mouse "mark" is faithfully passed on to the offspring if not crossed with other variants.

Risks and Diseases: Inbreeding delicacy. The most pushed selections of the Mickey Mouse are sometimes weaker immunologically.
