Species description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Broadly distributed in the tropical Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Galápagos Islands, north to southern Japan, and south to the Great Barrier Reef. Inhabits deep lagoons and seaward reefs down to 90 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the genus Chaetodon. Grows to a maximum length of 15 cm (6 inches). Oval, laterally compressed body with a short snout equipped with fine teeth.

Social Behavior: Peaceful. Found singly or in stable pairs. A gentle swimmer that continuously explores the rockwork for food.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Golden-orange or yellowish-brown body with two broad vertical bands: one through the eye and one behind the gills. The snout often has a light blue-grey tinge. No visible sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Needs at least 280 liters of tank volume with a mature aquascape offering multiple caves and open channels for active swimming.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Famous for eating pest Aiptasia. Readily consumes frozen mysis, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, nori, dry flakes, and pellets. Feed twice daily.

Water Quality: The most resilient and tolerant butterflyfish. Ideal parameters: temperature 24-27°C (75-81°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.022-1.025, GH 15-25, and KH 8-12.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Reef-safe with caution. Will likely nip at stony corals (SPS/LPS), zoanthids, and feather dusters. Best suited for fish-only-with-live-rock (FOWLR) setups or systems with hardy soft corals.

Aquarium Reproduction: Unrecorded in home tanks. Pelagic spawners. Larvae go through the specialized 'tholichthys' stage typical of the family.

Risks and Diseases: Quite hardy, but can still contract skin parasites under high stress or in poorly skimmed tanks.
