Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to waterways of northern Australia, where it forms dense underwater meadows in both running and still waters.
Taxonomy & Genetics: Genus Vallisneria, family Hydrocharitaceae. Distinguished by much narrower leaves compared to other species in the genus.
Physical Structure: Rosette plant spreading via runners. Leaves are thin, ribbon-like, stiff, and grow vertically from the base.
Color & Texture: Dark green or olive-green coloration. The leaf texture is smooth and tough, with finely serrated margins near the tips.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Lighting & CO2: Adapts to low light conditions, though moderate light is ideal. Does not require CO2 injection in low-tech setups.
Nutrition & Substrate: Heavy root feeder. Requires a fine gravel or sand substrate supplemented with iron-rich root fertilizer tablets.
Water Chemistry: Prefers hard, slightly alkaline water (pH 6.5 - 8.5). Growth may stall in extremely soft, acidic water.
Space Management & Placement: Great for the midground or background of nano and medium tanks. Plant with the crown above the substrate.
Pruning: Avoid trimming leaves horizontally as they will rot from the cut. Remove whole damaged leaves or clip runners to control spread.
Risks & Diseases: Highly sensitive to liquid carbon products (algaecides containing glutaraldehyde), which cause the leaves to melt rapidly.
