Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Cryptocoryne petchii 'Pink' is a horticultural selection derived from the type species Cryptocoryne petchii, which is native to the wet, shaded regions of Sri Lanka. In the wild, the type species is found along the banks of slow-flowing forest streams, growing semi-submerged on muddy and clayey soils rich in organic debris. The 'Pink' variant has been propagated in cultivation by capitalizing on the chromatic mutation that gives the leaves intense pink and reddish shades under specific growth conditions.
Taxonomy & Genetics: Taxonomically, it belongs to the Araceae family, genus Cryptocoryne. Many authors consider Cryptocoryne petchii to be a variety of Cryptocoryne beckettii (C. beckettii var. petchii). Genetically, the 'Pink' cultivar retains the strong hardiness of the original species but exhibits a genetic selection oriented toward a higher concentration of anthocyanins and carotenoids, which, in synergy with adequate light intensity and iron nutrition, accentuates the pink
Color & Texture:
Physical Structure: The plant exhibits a compact herbaceous rosette structure, with an average height of 10-20 cm. The leaves are lanceolate with markedly wavy margins, supported by flexible reddish stems arising from a branched rhizome. The root system is compact but extremely dense, with fleshy roots expanding laterally and vertically into the substrate to absorb nutrients and anchor the plant.
Color & Texture: The most striking feature is the leaf coloration: the upper side shows shades of bronze-brown, olive green, and bright pink, especially in younger leaves or under intense light. The underside is a uniform pinkish-purple or bright magenta. Dark longitudinal veins create a finely contrasted texture on the leaf surface, which appears matte or slightly waxy.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Lighting & CO2: Prefers low to moderate lighting. Under too intense light, the rosette tends to flatten completely to the ground, while under weak light the petioles stretch. Moderate light is, however, optimal for intensifying the pink shades. CO2 injection is not mandatory, but a minimum level of 10 mg/L improves the growth rate and color vibrancy.
Nutrition & Substrate: Needs a fertile substrate to express its color characteristics to the fullest. The use of aquasoil or the integration of iron and trace element tablets near the roots is highly recommended.
Water Chemistry: Thrives in soft to moderately hard water with stable pH between 6.0 and 7.5. The optimal water temperature ranges between 20°C and 28°C. Avoid drastic swings in conductivity and pH, which could cause osmotic stress to the plant.
Space Management & Placement: Thanks to its small size and eye-catching colors, it is excellent for the midground or foreground in medium-sized aquariums, or as a focal point in nano aquariums. Plant it in neat, small groups, spacing individual plants 3-4 cm apart to allow room for side shoots.
Pruning: Maintenance is minimal. Pruning consists of cutting damaged or yellowing outer leaves at the base of the rhizome with sharp scissors. This promotes the development of new pink leaves from the center of the rosette and prevents water quality degradation.
Risks & Diseases: While hardy, it is susceptible to Cryptocoryne melt if introduced into un-cycled tanks or if sudden thermal or chemical swings occur. It can be affected by green spot algae or black beard algae on older leaves due to its medium-slow growth rate.

Plant profile
- Placement
- Midground
- Strategically placing Cryptocoryne petchii "Pink" as a midground focal accent will maximize its aesthetic contribution to the tank. It possesses a rosette with prominently colored, rippled leaves that naturally draws the eye and breaks up monotonous plant groupings. Ensure it is planted in an area with stable flow and unobstructed light penetration.
- Botanical form
- Rosette
- The physical structure of Cryptocoryne petchii "Pink" is defined by its rosette with prominently colored, rippled leaves. Submersed specimens often display a more delicate and colorful appearance compared to their emersed counterparts. Its unique structural traits make it highly sought after by dedicated planted tank enthusiasts.
- Growth
- Medium
- The growth rate of Cryptocoryne petchii "Pink" is generally considered moderate under standard aquarium conditions. With the addition of CO2 injection and optimal lighting, its development can be moderately accelerated. However, patience is required as it establishes its root system before producing significant new foliage.
- Substrate
- Medium
- The substrate plays a crucial role in cultivating Cryptocoryne petchii "Pink" successfully in the aquarium. A soft, deep, and fertile soil layer allows its robust root network to expand properly. Providing supplemental root fertilization in inert substrates will drastically improve its stability and growth.
- Column fertilization
- Recommended
- While it relies heavily on its roots, Cryptocoryne petchii "Pink" still benefits from a lean liquid fertilization regime. Trace elements and potassium delivered via the water column help prevent pinholes and yellowing. Regular water changes coupled with careful dosing will keep the plant pristine and algae-free.
- Root fertilization
- None
- Targeted root fertilization is critical for the enduring vitality of Cryptocoryne petchii "Pink". High-quality root tabs inserted deep into the substrate provide a steady, localized supply of essential elements. This practice significantly reduces the risk of the dreaded Cryptocoryne melt during its growth cycle.
- Trimming
- Occasional
- Trimming should be done sparingly, removing only older or decaying leaves near the base. Cut the stems as close to the substrate as possible using sharp aquascaping scissors. Avoid cutting healthy foliage, as the slow growth rate means it will take time to recover.
- Propagation
- Runners
- Cryptocoryne petchii "Pink" spreads across the aquarium substrate by sending out lateral stolons. Aquarists can propagate it by simply snipping the runner connection once the daughter plant is adequately sized. Relocating these clones helps create dense, natural-looking clusters within the aquascape.
- Sensitivity
- Moderate
- Cryptocoryne petchii "Pink" is notoriously sensitive to sudden changes in water parameters, which can trigger 'Crypt melt'. If melting occurs, leave the root system intact as it will typically bounce back with new, adapted leaves. It prefers stable environments with consistent lighting and fertilization.
- Layout role
- Midground, Foreground, Nano, accent
- In aquascaping, Cryptocoryne petchii "Pink" serves as a fantastic structural element or accent plant. Its striking pinkish to reddish tones provide great contrast against typical green aquatic plants. It works exceptionally well in Nature Aquarium styles and shaded areas beneath driftwood.
