Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Tropical Indo-Pacific, from the East African coast to the Hawaiian Islands and Tuamotu. Inhabits rocky seaward reefs rich in deep cracks and crevices.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Family Muraenidae. Elongated anguilliform body lacking pectoral and pelvic fins. Reaches an unusually small maximum size of about 28 cm.

Social Behavior: Shy, nocturnal predator. Spends the vast majority of the day hidden in rockwork with only its head protruding. Territorial toward other moray eels.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Spectacular uniform golden-yellow or bright yellow coloration, sometimes with orange undertones. Distinctive blue and black eyes. No visible sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 150 liters with a large volume of live rock and dark caves. *CRITICAL REQUIREMENT:* A tightly sealed lid to prevent escape.

Diet and Feeding: Carnivore. Offer fresh fish chunks, shelled shrimp, and squid using long feeding tongs. Feed every 2 to 3 days.

Water Quality: Stable parameters: temperature 22-27°C, pH 8.0-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025. Powerful chemical and biological filtration is required to manage waste.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Reef-safe with corals. Will eat small fish (such as gobies or neon damsels) and ornamental shrimp. Keep with medium-to-large fish.

Aquarium Breeding: Never documented in home aquariums. In the wild, they release pelagic eggs into the open ocean before hatching.

Risks and Diseases: The primary risk is escaping from the tank. Highly sensitive to elevated ammonia. Accidental bites can cause infections due to oral bacteria.
