Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Tropical Indo-Pacific, widely distributed from the Red Sea and East African coast to the Marquesas and Society Islands. Lives on deep seaward reefs.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Family Muraenidae. Scientifically Gymnothorax zonipectis. Muscular snake-like body, smooth scale-less skin. Adult length up to 47 cm.
Social Behavior: Solitary, nocturnal, and opportunistic benthic predator. Hunts primarily at night using its highly developed sense of smell. Territorial with other morays.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Brown body covered with dark spots and white markings, dorsal and caudal fins decorated with distinct white and dark bars. No visual sexual dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires a large tank of at least 350 liters with many rocks arranged to form deep caves. *CRITICAL REQUIREMENT:* A heavy, secure lid is mandatory.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivore. Feed every 3-4 days with chunks of fresh fish, crabs, squid, and whole shrimp. Never feed by hand.
Water Quality: Stable parameters: temperature 22-26°C, pH 8.0-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025. A powerful protein skimmer is essential to remove organic waste.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Predator. Will eat any fish or crustaceo smaller than its mouth. Keep with large, robust fish.
Aquarium Breeding: Reproduction undocumented in captivity; spawns pelagic eggs in deep water during the natural breeding season.
Risks and Diseases: Nocturnal escape due to unshielded openings. Accidental bites can cause painful bacterial infections due to food residues on teeth.
