Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the Atlantic Ocean, ranging from the United States to Brazil, inhabiting coral reefs, rocky areas, and grassy flats.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the Muraenidae family. It has a thick, muscular body, a tapered head with a white snout, and sharp, backward-pointing teeth.

Social Behavior: A nocturnal and solitary predator. It stays in holes during the day, showing territorial behavior and potentially biting if hand-fed or cornered.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body is pale yellow or cream-colored, heavily covered in dark brown to black spots of various sizes. Sexual dimorphism is not noticeable.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Demands a large aquarium of at least 120 gallons with sturdy rock structures. Caves must be wide enough to accommodate its full body coil.

Diet and Feeding: Strictly carnivorous. Offer squid, krill, raw shrimp, and silversides. Feed two times per week using feeding tongs, never feed by hand.

Water Quality: Needs stable marine conditions, with a temperature between 22 and 28 degrees Celsius, pH 8.1-8.4, and efficient protein skimming.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Keep only with large tankmates like large angels, tangs, or triggerfish. Crabs, shrimp, and small fishes will be consumed.

Aquarium Breeding: Spawning in home aquariums is undocumented due to their pelagic nature and the complex requirements of rearing the larvae.

Risks and Diseases: High risk of escaping through any small opening in the tank hood. Prone to bacterial skin infections if kept in poor water conditions.
