Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Found along subtropical reefs in the western Pacific, specifically around Japan and Taiwan, preferring rocky crevices and cooler water zones.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Classified within the Muraenidae family. It features a robust, snake-like body without pectoral fins, a thick neck, and powerful jaws lined with sharp teeth.
Social Behavior: A solitary, territorial predator. It spends daylight hours anchored inside caves with only its head exposed, emerging at night to hunt actively.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Marked by a distinct yellowish background covered in a complex network of dark brown and purple spots. There is no visible sexual dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires a large tank of at least 100 gallons with secure, heavy rockwork designed to prevent collapses caused by the eel's powerful movements.
Diet and Feeding: A strict carnivore. Offer whole fish, shrimp, squid, and octopus chunks using long feeding tongs. Feed 2 to 3 times a week depending on size.
Water Quality: Prefers slightly cooler subtropical temperatures (20-25°C), stable marine salinity (1.021-1.025), and heavy filtration to handle its substantial bioload.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Only compatible with large, robust fish like groupers, snappers, or large tangs. Small fish and ornamental crustaceans will be eaten immediately.
Aquarium Breeding: Not achieved in home aquariums due to their large size, pelagic spawning habits, and the complex requirements of their leptocephalus larval stage.
Risks and Diseases: They are famous escape artists; the aquarium must be completely sealed with a tight lid. Overfeeding can lead to fatty liver disease.
