Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the Rio Negro basin in Brazil. Found in slow-moving forest streams with dark, acidic water filled with humic substances and leaf litter.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Classified within the Characidae family. Features a small, compact body shape typical of dwarf tetras, with a thin lateral line.
Social Behavior: Peaceful and slightly shy schooling fish. Must be kept in a group of at least 6 individuals to minimize stress and encourage active behavior.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Displays gorgeous iridescent tones with red and orange hints on the body and fins. Males are typically smaller, slimmer, and more colorful.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Best kept in a mature aquarium with dark substrate, driftwood branch decorations, and plants to provide shaded areas.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Provide high-quality micro pellets and flakes, along with live or frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, and cyclops.
Water Quality: Requires soft (GH < 10) and acidic (pH 5.5-7.0) water. Regular partial water changes are essential to maintain low nitrates.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Peaceful community fish. Best kept with other small Amazonian tetras, dwarf cichlids, and peaceful catfish.
Aquarium Breeding: Oviparous. Requires soft, acidic water conditions and dense mosses or fine plants in a dedicated breeding setup.
Risks and Diseases: Prone to bacterial infections and stress if water parameters fluctuate or are kept in hard water.
