Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: This species is native to eastern Peru, particularly the tributaries of the Rio Ucayali and the upper Amazon River basin. It inhabits slow-flowing forest streams, oxbows, and blackwater creeks shaded by dense canopy.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belonging to the Characidae family, it exhibits a laterally compressed body shape with a moderately high back profile. It grows to around 4.0 cm in length and has a relatively long anal fin base.
Social Behavior: A shy, shoaling fish that must be kept in groups. A minimum of 6 individuals is required, but 10 or more is ideal to help them feel secure and display their natural behaviors.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Features a brownish-red back and a striking dark black lateral band highlighted by a golden or coppery line above it. Adult males display richer red coloration in their fins and a slimmer build than females.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of 60 liters or larger. Setup should include tangled roots, fine sand, and dense planting to offer shade. Peat filtration is recommended to replicate the natural amber-colored water.
Diet and Feeding: Feeds on micro-invertebrates in nature. In captivity, it accepts fine dry food, but thrives best when fed regular live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and cyclops.
Water Quality: Demands clean, soft, and acidic water. Keep temperature at 22-26°C, pH between 5.5 and 7.0, and GH 1-8 dGH. Very sensitive to organic waste accumulation.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Best kept with other peaceful, small species like Corydoras, quiet tetras, and small dwarf cichlids. Avoid boisterous tankmates that might outcompete them for food.
Aquarium Breeding: Spawning requires a dedicated tank with very soft water (GH < 3) and pH around 6.0. Eggs are scattered over fine moss. Remove parents immediately after spawning to protect the eggs.
Risks and Diseases: Prone to skin parasites like ich if subjected to sudden temperature drops or poor water quality. A secure lid is needed as they are active jumpers.
