Black Piranha
Serrasalmus rhombeus
The solitary colossus of South American rivers. This formidable predator possesses one of the most powerful bites in the animal kingdom. Unlike red-bellied schooling piranhas, the Black Piranha is strictly solitary and fiercely intolerant of any tank mates.

Description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Widespread across the Amazon, Orinoco, and Guiana river basins. Inhabits diverse water types (turbid whitewater, clearwater, and tannin-rich blackwater). Prefers large, deep river channels, positioning itself behind submerged rocks or logs to ambush prey.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Serrasalmidae family. It is the largest and most powerful piranha species, capable of nearing 45-50 cm (18-20 inches) in the wild and weighing over 3 kg (7 lbs). The body is a massive, laterally compressed rhomboidal disk (hence rhombeus). The lower jaw is highly prognathous (protruding) and armed with deadly interlocking razor teeth. Eyes are blood red.
Social Behavior: Strictly SOLITARY. Intolerant of its own kind and other species. If two specimens are housed together, one will eventually kill the other. In captivity, it spends hours almost motionless mid-water as an ambush predator, bursting into lightning-fast sprints for food.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Striking ontogenetic color shift: juveniles are silvery with dense dark spots and transparent fins. As they age, the body darkens progressively until it becomes lead-gray or ink-black, earning its name. No obvious sexual dimorphism without close cloacal inspection.
Care and observations
Tank Setup: Being a near half-meter 'tank', an adult requires a monstrous aquarium (minimum 150-200 cm / 5-6 feet in length and 60-80 cm / 24-32 inches in depth). Decor must be simple and unmovable: massive driftwood, large smooth boulders, and boundless open space. Glass heaters will be smashed; only use titanium heaters or in-line external thermofilters.
Feeding and Diet: Carnivorous predator. The barbaric practice of feeding live feeder goldfish must be banned: it introduces lethal diseases and thiaminase-induced deficiencies. Feed whole dead fish (e.g., silversides, sprats), white fish fillets, mussels, and unshelled shrimp. Feed juveniles daily, colossal adults 2-3 times a week.
Water Quality: Being a massive carnivore that rips chunks of flesh, the bioload (ammonia produced) is staggering. Oversized filtration (two large canister filters) and heavy weekly water changes are mandatory. pH 5.5-7.5, temperature 24-28°C (75-82°F).
Compatibility and Cohabitation: INCOMPATIBLE WITH ANY FORM OF LIFE. Even armored Plecos or other piranha species will eventually be dismembered. Must be kept alone (Single Species Specimen Tank).
Aquarium Reproduction: Impossible in normal home aquariums. In nature, during the wet season, they dig bowl-nests in the substrate, and both parents become killing machines to defend the nest.
Risks and Diseases: 1. The greatest risk is TO THE KEEPER: a bite from this animal will easily sever a human finger to the bone. Never carelessly put hands in the tank. 2. Susceptible to parasites if fed raw, un-frozen fish of unknown origin.
