Species description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Widespread in the tropical Indo-Pacific, from East Africa to the Tuamotu Islands, north to southern Japan (Ryukyu Islands), and south to Australia. Inhabits protected reefs, lagoons, and seaward slopes at depths of 3 to 150 meters, preferring caves.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Apogonidae. Features a laterally compressed body, large eyes, and a wide mouth equipped with prominent fang-like canine teeth. Can reach a maximum length of 18-19 cm.
Social Behavior: Predominantly nocturnal and solitary. During the day, it remains hidden inside caves or under rocky overhangs, emerging at dusk to hunt small fish and crustaceans.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Silvery-grey body with approximately 8-10 thin longitudinal brown or black stripes on the flanks. A dark spot is present on the caudal peduncle. No visible external sexual dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires an aquarium of at least 250 liters due to its size and organic waste output. Provide extensive live rock structures forming large, dark caves and shaded areas for daylight resting. Subdued lighting is preferred.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous and active predator. In captivity, feed with substantial meaty foods: mysis, krill, whole shrimp, fish flesh, or chopped clams. Feed 1-2 times daily, preferably in the evening.
Water Quality: Stable parameters: temperature 22-28°C, pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity (SG) 1.020-1.025, GH 15-25, KH 8-12. A strong protein skimmer and efficient filtration are vital to manage the high bioload.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Reef safe with caution. Harmless to corals, but will consume any small fish (such as young gobies, small clownfish) and ornamental shrimp. House only with robust, medium-to-large tankmates.
Aquarium Reproduction: Paternal mouthbrooder. The male holds the fertilized egg mass in his mouth until hatching. Captive reproduction is undocumented due to the extreme difficulty of raising pelagic larvae.
Risks and Diseases: Prone to nitrate stress if filtration is insufficient. Generally hardy but can contract bacterial infections or parasites if introduced to immature tanks or subjected to high stress.
