Species description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Eastern Atlantic: from the Strait of Gibraltar to Angola, including the Azores, Madeira, and Cape Verde islands; common throughout the Mediterranean Sea. Inhabits caves, rocky crevices, and dimly lit coastal reefs at depths of 2 to 50 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Apogonidae. Features a laterally compressed oval body, large oblique mouth with a slightly protruding lower jaw, and unusually large ringed eyes. Reaches 15 cm.
Social Behavior: Peaceful and shy. Nocturnal species that lives in small groups inside caves or under rocky ledges during the day, emerging only after sunset to hunt.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body is a beautiful bright red or solid vivid orange, with two distinctive parallel black stripes located behind the eyes. Adult males do not show obvious dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 200 liters. Ideal for Mediterranean or subtropical tanks. Arrange rocks to create dark caves and shaded crevices. Low jumping risk.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivore. In captivity, feeds on protein-rich frozen foods (mysis, brine shrimp, pieces of fresh shrimp or fish). Feed preferably in the evening hours.
Water Quality: Prefers cooler temperatures. Optimal between 15°C and 24°C (avoid stable tropical temperatures above 26°C). pH 8.1-8.4, salinity SG 1.024-1.026. GH 15-25.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Ideal for temperate marine tanks or Mediterranean biotope setups. Lives peacefully with similar fish. Avoid aggressive tropical fish or large predators.
Aquarium Reproduction: Paternal mouthbrooder. The male holds the fertilized eggs in his mouth for about a week, fasting completely. Raising the larvae is extremely difficult.
Risks and Diseases: Sensitive to summer water overheating (above 26°C for long periods). May suffer from starvation if housed with voracious diurnal fish that consume all food during the day.
