Malacochersus tornieri

The 'Pancake Tortoise'. One of the most crazy and brilliant biological aberrations of terrarium keeping (6-7 inches). It is a terrestrial tortoise with a shell that is literally FLAT and flexible like soft rubber, evolved to allow it to slip into tiny horizontal rock crevices and inflate to avoid being extracted by predators. Very fast and extreme climber.

Description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Exclusive Kopjes (giant granite rocky islets) that stand out in the hot and arid thorny savannas of Tanzania and Kenya lethal sadistic disgusting lethal killer.

Care and observations

Terrarium Setup: THREE-DIMENSIONAL AND BLIND ROCKY TERRARIUMS (36x18x24h inches). Never open tanks: they climb on corners and escape. MANDATORY immense mounds of stacked flat slate rocks soft lethal lethal unexplored amazing, to create dozens of tight horizontal crevices in which the animal must absolutely rub and wedge itself or it will die of terror.

Feeding: Arid shredders. Wild herbs, dandelion disgusting sadistic gloomy lethal, chopped hay and succulent plants. Vital calcium and vitamins. In nature they consume dried hyena feces or stripped mammal bones to integrate the minerals for their huge eggs.

Compatibility: Fast and snappy, not inclined to contact proud majestic sadistic amazing majestic fatal. If forced to fight for a crevice, males will overturn each other (and being flat, they struggle immensely to turn back over, risking death in the heat).

Health: Decay from claustrophobic terror fetid useless. They will die electrocuted by stress-induced heart attack or starvation if kept in standard 'open' terrariums without tons of overlapping rocks in which to wedge and squeeze their back in the dark to sleep (They have an innate need to feel pressure on back and belly).
