Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the dry steppes of Central Asia. Inhabits arid, dry regions with extreme winter cold, where it digs deep underground burrows.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Member of the Testudinidae family. Also known as Agrionemys horsfieldii. Small tortoise growing up to 15-20 cm in shell length.
Behavior and Habits: Diurnal and terrestrial. Highly skilled digger. Naturally undergoes winter hibernation (brumation) and summer estivation under extreme heat.
Morphology: Rounded, flat shell, olive-green to yellowish with dark patches. Females are larger than males, and males have longer tails.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Terrarium Setup: Best kept in secure outdoor enclosures with deep fencing, as they are expert diggers. Indoors, use a tortoise table of at least 120x60 cm.
Lighting and Heating: Basking spot temperature 32-35°C. High-output UVB lighting (10.0) is mandatory for calcium synthesis and shell strength.
Humidity and Hydration: Prefers dry environments (40-50% humidity). Provide a shallow water dish for drinking and soaking.
Feeding and Supplementation: Strict herbivore. Feed weeds, dandelion, clover, and grass hay. Avoid fruits and high-sugar vegetables. Supplement with calcium.
Compatibility: Can be housed in groups of females. Do not keep multiple males together as they will fight and stress females.
Health and Common Diseases: Prone to shell pyramiding from high-protein diets, respiratory infections due to damp conditions, and intestinal parasites.
