Species description
Nymphoides indica, often known as the "Banana Plant" due to its distinctive tuberous root structures, is native to tropical and subtropical regions across the globe, including Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Americas. It typically inhabits calm or slow-moving waters such as ponds, lakes, and rivers, where its leaves often float on the surface. This natural habitat makes it highly adaptable to both submerged and floating environments within an aquarium, though it can also grow emergent and flower out of water under suitable conditions. Belonging to the Menyanthaceae family, Nymphoides indica is closely related to other aquatic plants known for their floating leaves and ability to form dense mats. Taxonomically, it shares superficial resemblances with the genus Nymphaea (true water lilies), despite being from a different family.
Care, breeding and tankmates
This species is remarkably tolerant of a wide range of water parameters, making it suitable for various aquarium setups. Ideal temperatures range between 15.0 and 32.0 C, though it often prefers the upper end for more vigorous, tropical growth. The pH can range from 5.0 to 8.0, indicating its adaptability to both slightly acidic and alkaline waters. Tolerated carbonate hardness (KH) spans from 1.0 to 20.0, making it suitable for nearly all freshwater types, although stability and prevention of sudden fluctuations are always preferred for plant health. Like many aquatic plants, Nymphoides indica can be susceptible to nutrient deficiencies if not adequately fertilized, manifesting as yellowing leaves or stunted growth.

Best placed in the midground or background. Its trailing stems and floating leaves need vertical space. It is particularly striking in open-top or rimless aquariums where its surface growth can be appreciated.
Features cordate (heart-shaped) leaves that sit flat on the water surface, connected to long, slender underwater stems. The submerged leaves are typically much smaller and more delicate. It can produce beautiful, fringed white flowers above the waterline.
It exhibits a very fast growth rate. It is an aggressive grower under high light and CO2, often requiring weekly maintenance. In lower tech setups, the growth is still steady but more manageable.
Regular liquid dosing of NPK and trace elements is highly recommended to sustain its fast growth. Without sufficient water column nutrients, the floating leaves may turn yellow or develop holes. Iron ensures a rich green color.
Root tabs or a nutrient-rich aquasoil will significantly boost the size and overall health of the surface leaves. The root system can grow quite large to anchor the long stems against water currents.
Trim excess floating leaves by cutting the stem at the base to allow light to penetrate to lower levels of the aquarium. Leaving cut stems can cause them to rot, so remove the entire stem. Prune frequently to maintain a balanced look.
Propagates profusely via runners and adventitious plantlets that form on the stems, often just below the water surface. Simply detach the plantlets once they have their own root system and plant them in the substrate.
It is tolerant of various water conditions but can melt if suddenly moved to a completely different environment, such as drastically different pH or hardness. It handles warmer temperatures well. High light is needed for flowering.
Excellent for open-top aquariums where its flowers can be seen. It provides essential shade for low-light plants or timid fish species underneath. It brings a slice of a natural pond ecosystem into the home.
