Description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Circumtropical MARINE species, widespread in all tropical oceans of the world (Indo-Pacific and Atlantic). Frequents shallow lagoons, sandy bays, and coral reef margins, hiding among sponges and rocks.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Long-spine Porcupinefish (Diodon holocanthus). Porcupinefish of the Diodontidae family. The body is covered with long spines that lie flat when the animal is calm. It has large wide-open eyes and a powerful fused beak formed by two teeth (Di-odon = two teeth).

Social Behavior: Nocturnal and solitary. Swims slowly with its pectoral fins, appearing clumsy, but is a methodical predator. In captivity, it develops a very strong bond with the keeper, recognizing them and "begging" for food at the surface like a pet dog.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Light yellowish-brown base color, covered with dark spots and ocelli on the back. There is no visible sexual dimorphism. In situations of severe stress, it inflates by swallowing water (or air), erecting the long spines as a formidable defense.

Care and observations

Aquarium Setup: Massive marine aquarium (minimum 1000 liters / 250 gallons). Needs wide open spaces for swimming and refuges proportionate to its giant size. Rocky overcrowding is not recommended. Mechanical and electronic filtration (skimmer) must be oversized.

Diet and Feeding: Durophagous carnivore (eats hard-shelled prey). MUST regularly consume whole shrimp with carapace, crabs, closed mussels, clams, and snails to file down its continuously growing bony beak. If fed only soft foods, the beak will grow until it prevents feeding.

Water Quality: Stable marine parameters (Salinity 1.020-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4). It is a "messy eater" that produces a huge biological load: massive water changes and the use of anti-phosphate resins are often necessary.

Compatibility and Tankmates: NOT Reef Safe: it destroys corals, crustaceans, and snails. Suitable for "Fish Only" (FO) tanks with other large and robust fish (Tangs, large Angelfish, not excessively aggressive Triggerfish). Will swallow any fish small enough to fit in its beak.

Aquarium Reproduction: Impossible in home aquariums. Pelagic reproduction: they release eggs in the open sea. Larvae spend months carried by ocean currents before settling near the coast.

Risks and Diseases: Never let it swallow air: if it inflates out of the water, it may not be able to expel it, dying while floating. Very prone to marine Ich (Cryptocaryon irritans). Contains a lethal tetrodotoxin in its internal organs.
