Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Shallow reefs and seagrass beds of the Western Atlantic Ocean, ranging from Florida and the Bahamas down to Brazil. Prefers areas with dense gorgonian growth.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the family Monacanthidae. Features a deep, laterally compressed body covered in rough, velvet-like skin. Possesses a locking dorsal spine. Reaches up to 45 cm.

Social Behavior: Solitary or found in pairs. Generally peaceful toward larger, non-aggressive fish, but territorial against conspecifics.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Dark brown to olive green body covered with large white spots. The spots can fade rapidly depending on mood. No prominent sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: A minimum tank size of 500 liters (130 gallons) is required, featuring stable rockwork and open swimming paths.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous, feeding on sponges, gorgonians, hydroids, algae, and small invertebrates. Offer frozen foods and algae-based pellets.

Water Quality: Demands clean marine conditions: specific gravity 1.020-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and temperature kept at 22-26°C.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Best kept with larger, peaceful reef species.

Absolutely not safe for reef aquariums: as it will eat corals.

Aquarium Breeding: Not documented in home aquariums. In the wild, they lay demersal eggs in nests on sandy substrates.

Risks and Diseases: Prone to marine parasites under stressful conditions. Requires high water quality and a varied diet containing sponge elements.
