Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish

Melanotaenia praecox

The Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish (*Melanotaenia praecox*) encapsulates all the beauty and dynamism of its family in a mini format. Reaching a maximum of 6-8 cm (2.5-3 inches), it literally shines with its own light: its iridescent scales reflect a blinding neon blue or cyan with every movement, contrasted by the bright red or bright yellow margins of the fins. This small size has made it one of the most popular schooling fish for planted and medium-sized aquariums.

Description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: New Guinea (Mamberamo river basin). Inhabits small shady rivers, clear or amber, with a lively current surrounded by lush forest vegetation and submerged branches.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia praecox). The smallest exponent of the genus (rarely exceeds 6 cm / 2.4 inches). It has the typical shield morphology (high rhomboidal) and a powerful bipartite dorsal fin.

Social Behavior: Compact and hyperkinetic school. They are very lively (at times anxiety-inducing for other species). Males challenge each other at dawn by fanning all their fins and performing concentric dances for the females, without ever getting hurt.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Living reflectors. The entire body is covered with iridescent ice neon-blue reflective scales. The fins are the distinctive gender trait: intense and bright orange-red in males, yellowish or faintly orange in females.

Care and observations

Aquarium Setup: Being the smallest (Dwarf), an 80-100 cm (32-40 inches / 25G) tank is tolerable for 6-8 specimens. The setup must combine a lot of open space in the center (fundamental) with ample peripheral fronds of Microsorum or Vallisneria. Lots of current (wavemaker).

Diet and Feeding: Voracious surface insectivores. They are swallowing machines; they immediately accept quality flakes, freeze-dried krill and daphnia. Small, upward-facing mouth, not suitable for heavy granules.

Water Quality: They love very clean and highly oxygenated water (they often stay close to the filter outlet). Ideal pH around neutral. They are sensitive to oxygen drops and nitrates.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Peaceful but not recommended with shy or slow fish (such as Gouramis or Bettas) which would be stressed by their frenzy or robbed of food. Ideal companions for Corydoras, Ancistrus and lively characins (Buenos Aires Tetra).

Aquarium Reproduction: Easy and frequent (Continuous spawners). If the tank contains thick java moss, the parents will throw tiny adhesive eggs there daily. Often some fry appear on the surface without human intervention.

Risks and Diseases: The Fatal Ulcer (Mycobacteriosis). The M. praecox has a genetic Achilles' heel: it is frighteningly vulnerable to mycobacteria. A slight deterioration in hygiene generates sores or holes (necrotic ulcers) on the blue flanks; at that point, there is nothing more that can be done for the individual.
