Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to the island of Borneo, where it grows as a rheophyte on stones along rapid streams in deep forest environments.
Taxonomy & Genetics: Genus Bucephalandra, belonging to the Araceae family. It is considered the type species originally described for the genus.
Physical Structure: Features a tough, creeping rhizome from which leathery, lanceolate leaves develop, with robust petioles and strong roots for anchoring.
Color & Texture: Leaves display dark green or bluish tones, often with metallic or iridescent reflections under water. Tiny silver dots are visible on the leaf surface.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Lighting & CO2: Requires low to medium light. High light promotes algae without boosting growth rate. CO2 is optional but encourages healthier leaf formation.
Nutrition & Substrate: Epiphytic plant, do not plant in soil. Absorbs nutrients from the water column; benefits from regular liquid micro and macro fertilization.
Water Chemistry: Prefers clean water with temperature between 21°C and 28°C, and pH between 6.0 and 8.0. Maintaining stable parameters prevents leaf melting.
Space Management & Placement: Attach to rocks or driftwood in the foreground or midground.
Never bury the rhizome: in the substrate as it will rot.
Pruning: Extremely slow grower, requiring minimal maintenance. Propagation is done by cutting the rhizome with a sharp blade into smaller pieces.
Risks & Diseases: Main risks are rhizome rot if buried, and BBA (black brush algae) infestation if subjected to excessive light or low flow.
