Species description

Glossostigma elatinoides is native to Australia, New Zealand, and Tasmania. It grows mainly in swampy areas, muddy banks of rivers and lakes, and regularly flooded zones, where it forms dense emersed or submerged carpets depending on the water level fluctuations. It belongs to the Phrymaceae family and is one of the most iconic foreground plants in modern aquascaping, made famous worldwide by Takashi Amano in the 1990s. Genetically, it is programmed to expand horizontally via creeping runners when it detects intense light radiation. It features an extremely low creeping structure, with thin stems growing horizontally along the ground, anchoring at every node via adventitious roots.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Prefers soft and slightly acidic water, with a pH between 5.0 and 7.2, but also tolerates moderately hard water. The optimal temperature is between 15 and 28 °C; excessively high temperatures (above 29 °C) slow growth and can cause the carpet to rot. The main risk is the development of filamentous algae or cyanobacteria within the carpet if water circulation is poor or nutrients are unbalanced. In case of iron deficiency, the tiny leaves tend to become translucent or whitish.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

This species originates from: Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania.

Origin

Australia, New Guinea, and Oceania

Plant profile

Placement
Foreground

Ideal for the extreme foreground of the aquarium, forming dense carpets when provided with adequate light. It can also be placed between hardscape to soften transitions. Due to its creeping nature, it stays very low to the substrate.

Botanical form
Stem

A very small stem plant that creeps along the substrate via runners. It has tiny, spatulate leaves that emerge in pairs. Its root system is delicate but branches extensively to secure the runners.

Growth
Fast

Grows very rapidly under high light and CO2 injection, quickly forming a dense mat. Under lower light, growth slows and it may grow vertically. Frequent trimming may be required once it establishes a full carpet.

Substrate
High

Glossostigma elatinoides thrives best in a nutrient-rich, fine-grained aquasoil that supports its extensive horizontal root network. Because its delicate roots are relatively short, a substrate depth of 3 to 5 centimeters is sufficient for firm anchoring while allowing its runners to easily spread along the surface. A fertile, uncompacted substrate ensures optimal absorption of essential macronutrients, which is vital for maintaining a dense, vibrant green carpet.

Column fertilization
Recommended

Benefits heavily from water column dosing, especially for micronutrients and potassium. A consistent supply of iron is critical to prevent chlorosis in the fast-growing leaves. Maintain stable CO2 levels to prevent algae from competing with its growth.

Root fertilization
None

Root tabs are highly recommended as it draws significant nutrients from the substrate. A nutrient-rich aquasoil provides an ideal base for its fast-spreading runners. Root feeding encourages denser and faster carpet formation.

Trimming
Occasional

Trim aggressively using curved scissors, cutting close to the substrate to prevent the carpet from becoming too thick. If left untrimmed, the lower layers may die off, causing the carpet to uproot. Replant healthy trimmings to expand the carpet.

Propagation
Cuttings

Propagates easily through runners that spread horizontally across the substrate. Simply cut a runner between nodes and replant to start a new patch. It spreads exponentially once the roots are established.

Sensitivity
Moderate

Highly sensitive to shading, which causes it to reach upwards rather than creep. It is also prone to melting if CO2 or nutrient levels fluctuate abruptly. Algae can easily overtake its tiny leaves if conditions are not balanced.

Layout role
Nano, Foreground, group

Serves as a classic carpeting plant, often used in Iwagumi and nature-style layouts. Its incredibly small leaf size provides an excellent sense of scale, making aquariums look larger. It creates a lush, bright green lawn effect.
