Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: This species inhabits dense tropical rainforests, bamboo thickets, and vegetation near watercourses in South and Southeast Asia, spending most of its life perched in shrubs and trees.
Taxonomy and Genetics: The genus Trimeresurus groups the Asian palm and bamboo pit vipers. They possess heat-sensitive loreal pits located between the eye and nostril to hunt warm-blooded prey in total darkness.
Behavior and Habits: Arboreal, nocturnal, and crepuscular. Uses its prehensile tail to anchor itself securely to branches, allowing it to strike quickly at passing prey.
Morphology: Slender body with strongly keeled scales, triangular head, and predominantly green or brownish camouflage patterns. Males are typically smaller than females and often display distinct light ventrolateral stripes.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Terrarium Setup: Requires a tall, vertically oriented enclosure decorated with thin climbing branches and broad-leafed plants to create optimal perching spots and foliage cover.
Lighting and Heating: Keep daytime temperatures at 24-28°C with a localized basking spot of 29-30°C. Provide low-intensity UVB lighting to support calcium synthesis.
Humidity and Hydration: Maintain high humidity levels of 70-90%. Spray the terrarium daily or use an automatic misting system; they rely on drinking water droplets from leaves.
Feeding and Supplementation: Feeds on small mice in captivity. Feed juveniles every 7-10 days and adults every 14 days. Dust prey items with calcium and multivitamin supplements.
Compatibility: Strictly solitary and territorial. Keep animals individually to prevent aggression, stress, or accidental envenomation.
Health and Common Diseases: Vulnerable to dehydration, leading to incomplete shedding (dysecdysis). Stagnant moisture without proper air circulation can lead to mouth rot (stomatitis) and scale rot.
