Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: This species inhabits humid montane forests, bamboo groves, and rocky areas of East and South Asia, preferring cool and sheltered microhabitats.

Taxonomy and Genetics: The genus Protobothrops comprises the Asian lance-headed pit vipers (Habus). Many species were formerly classified under the genus Trimeresurus.

Behavior and Habits: Terrestrial and partially arboreal, primarily active at night. An opportunistic hunter with a highly defensive temperament.

Morphology: Elongated and very distinct lance-shaped head, slender but muscular body with complex brown or olive patterns. Adult females are larger than males.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Terrarium Setup: Requires a large, horizontally oriented or mixed enclosure with sturdy climbing branches and ground-level hiding shelters.

Lighting and Heating: Keep daytime temperatures at 19-23°C. Requires a cool winter brumation period at 10-14°C. Provide low-output UVB lighting.

Humidity and Hydration: Maintain stable humidity at 70-85%. Mist the enclosure 2-3 times a week and keep a clean water bowl on the floor.

Feeding and Supplementation: Feed thawed rodents or birds every 10-14 days. Dust prey items with calcium and multivitamin supplements once a month.

Compatibility: Strictly solitary. House individually to prevent stress, territorial disputes, or cannibalism.

Health and Common Diseases: Vulnerable to thermal stress if summer temperatures rise too high. Prone to respiratory infections or dermatitis if enclosure hygiene is poor.
