Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the cool, humid montane forests of East Asia, including southern China, northern Vietnam, and Myanmar. Inhabits dense leaf litter and rocky crevices at high altitudes.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Belongs to the Viperidae family and Azemiopinae subfamily, being the sole representative. The species Azemiops feae is regarded as an evolutionary bridge and a living fossil among vipers.
Behavior and Habits: Primarily nocturnal and crepuscular, highly secretive and docile but defensive when cornered. Spends daylight hours hidden under damp forest floor litter.
Morphology: Features an elliptical head covered with large plates, a stout body with smooth bluish-black scales, and thin orange or yellow bands. Sexual dimorphism is very subtle.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Terrarium Setup: Requires a spacious enclosure with deep, damp substrate like coco coir or sphagnum moss, and multiple dark hide boxes at ground level.
Lighting and Heating: Keep temperatures cool and stable between 15°C and 22°C. Temperatures exceeding 22°C are highly dangerous. Provide low-intensity UVB lighting.
Humidity and Hydration: Extremely high humidity is critical, around 85-100%. Mist regularly to prevent skin shedding problems and supply a clean water bowl.
Feeding and Supplementation: Feed small rodents or lizards. Often reluctant to feed in captivity, requiring a quiet and stress-free environment to encourage eating.
Compatibility: Strictly solitary. Do not house together except for brief breeding introductions managed by professional keepers.
Health and Common Diseases: Highly susceptible to thermal stress, respiratory infections, and skin issues if humidity drops or ventilation is poor.
