Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Inhabits coastal forests, rubber plantations, and agricultural areas, hiding in low vegetation.

Taxonomy and Genetics: The species Calloselasma rhodostoma is the sole representative of the genus Calloselasma. It belongs to the Viperidae family and Crotalinae subfamily.

Behavior and Habits: Highly sedentary terrestrial ambush predator. Remains motionless for days in one spot but is notorious for its irritable temperament and lightning-fast strike.

Morphology: Stout body, very distinct triangular head with prominent snout shields. Pattern of dark triangles on a beige or light brown background. Females are significantly larger.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Terrarium Setup: Medium-sized horizontal terrarium. Use coco coir mixed with orchid bark as substrate to maintain humidity without waterlogging.

Lighting and Heating: Keep daytime temperatures between 24°C and 28°C with a warm basking spot of 30°C. Provide low-output UVB lighting for 10-12 hours daily.

Humidity and Hydration: Maintain humidity around 60-80%. Provide a large, heavy water bowl at ground level to prevent tipping.

Feeding and Supplementation: Readily accepts thawed rodents of appropriate size. Feed adults every 14 days. Dust prey with calcium and vitamins monthly.

Compatibility: Strictly solitary. Males and females should only be introduced by experienced breeders for reproduction purposes.

Health and Common Diseases: Vulnerable to mouth rot (stomatitis) and internal parasites if enclosure hygiene is not strictly maintained.
