Mount Kenya Bush Viper

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to the rainforests and montane regions of sub-Saharan Africa. This viper lives on shrubs, bushes, and low tree branches, rarely descending to the forest floor.

Taxonomy and Genetics: The genus Atheris comprises African bush vipers, characterized by heavily keeled, overlapping scales that create a distinctive spiny or bristly appearance.

Behavior and Habits: Arboreal, nocturnal, and highly sedentary. An ambush predator that remains motionless for hours, camouflaged among foliage, waiting for prey to pass.

Morphology: Features pointed head scales, a triangular head, and a wide array of color phases (green, yellow, red, black). Females are typically larger and heavier than males.

Terrarium Setup: Requires a tall, vertically oriented enclosure equipped with numerous thin horizontal branches for perching and dense artificial foliage for cover.

Lighting and Heating: Keep daytime temperatures around 18-22°C with a warm basking spot of 24°C. Low-output UVB lighting is recommended.

Humidity and Hydration: Maintain moderate humidity levels between 60% and 80%. Mist lightly 2-3 times a week. Provide an elevated water dish as they often drink from raised bowls.

Feeding and Supplementation: Feed thawed, appropriately sized small mice using long forceps for safety. Dust prey with calcium and vitamin supplements once a month.

Compatibility: Strictly solitary. Do not house multiple specimens together to avoid stress, territorial fighting, or injury.

Health and Common Diseases: Prone to respiratory infections caused by stagnant, overly humid conditions; ensure high ventilation. Sedentary lifestyle increases obesity risks.
