Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to the montane rainforests of the Nguru Mountains in Tanzania. Found in the damp understory among leaf litter.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Part of the Chamaeleonidae family, genus Rhampholeon. Characterized by pointed protrusions on its head.
Behavior and Habits: Slow-moving, diurnal, and low-climbing species. Relies on crypsis (mimicking dead leaves) to escape predator detection.
Morphology: Tiny size (5-6 cm total length). Features a laterally flattened body with spine-like scales. Males have longer tail bases.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Terrarium Setup: Provide a vertical terrarium with dense low live plants, thin twigs, and dry leaf litter. Ensure good ventilation.
Lighting and Heating: Keep temperatures cool: 22-24°C during day, dropping to 16-20°C at night. Temperatures above 28°C are lethal. Use low-level UVB.
Humidity and Hydration: Maintain high humidity levels (75-90%). Mist daily; chameleons lick water droplets off leaves.
Feeding and Supplementation: Insectivorous. Feed fruit flies, springtails, and pinhead crickets dusted with calcium.
Compatibility: Keep individually or in sexed pairs. Avoid cohabitation with other species or larger predators.
Health and Common Diseases: Highly prone to respiratory infections and stress-related failure in suboptimal temperatures.
