Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to the Usambara Mountains in Tanzania. Inhabits the shady understory of montane rainforests among leaf litter.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Member of the Chamaeleonidae family. A tiny dwarf chameleon (growing up to 6.0 cm) with a short, non-prehensile tail.
Behavior and Habits: Diurnal and slow-moving. It sways as it walks to mimic a dry leaf blowing in the wind. Forages for tiny invertebrates.
Morphology: Brown to gray colors resembling dead leaves. Males are smaller, slimmer, and have a wider tail base.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Terrarium Setup: Minimum size is 45x45x45 cm. Provide thin climbing twigs, a dry leaf litter layer, and dense low planting.
Lighting and Heating: Prefers cool climates. Keep ambient temp at 20-22°C with a basking area of 24-25°C. Provide low UVB lighting (2.0).
Humidity and Hydration: Keep humidity high (70-90%). Mist daily; they only drink droplets off leaves, so misting is critical.
Feeding and Supplementation: Feed on small live insects (fruit flies, small crickets, springtails). Dust food with calcium and vitamins.
Compatibility: Best kept individually or in compatible pairs. Easily stressed by active tankmates or dominant chameleons.
Health and Common Diseases: Highly sensitive to temperatures above 26°C. Respiratory issues can occur without good ventilation.
