Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Montane rainforests of the West Usambara Mountains in Tanzania. Inhabits the high canopy under humid, cool conditions.

Taxonomy and Genetics: Family Chamaeleonidae, genus Kinyongia. Formerly grouped under Kinyongia fischeri due to morphological similarities.

Behavior and Habits: Strictly arboreal, diurnal, and solitary. Moves slowly and cautiously through branches. Males are highly territorial and defensive.

Morphology: Laterally compressed body with cranial crests. Males possess two large, flattened, scaly rostral horns. Females lack these horns completely.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Terrarium Setup: Must be kept in a full screen mesh enclosure (minimum 60x45x90 cm) to ensure maximum airflow. Cover with branches and live foliage like Ficus benjamina.

Lighting and Heating: Prefers cool montane temperatures. Daytime ambient 20-22 °C, with a mild basking spot of 25 °C. Nighttime drop to 12-15 °C is vital. Use moderate UVB.

Humidity and Hydration: 60-70% daytime humidity, rising to 90-100% at night. Mist the cage thoroughly daily; they drink water droplets from leaves.

Feeding and Supplementation: Feed a variety of live insects (crickets, roaches, silkworms). Dust food with calcium twice a week, and D3/multivitamins once a month.

Compatibility: Strictly solitary animal. Keeping more than one chameleon in the same cage leads to severe stress and territorial fights.

Health and Common Diseases: Highly susceptible to heat stress (temperatures above 26 °C can be fatal). Prone to respiratory infections if airflow is inadequate.
