Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to the tiny islet of Nosy Hara in northern Madagascar. It lives in leaf litter on karst limestone formations (tsingy) in dry deciduous forests.

Taxonomy and Genetics: Belongs to the Chamaeleonidae family, genus Brookesia. Formalized in 2012, it represents an extreme case of insular dwarfism.

Behavior and Habits: Diurnal and terrestrial. Spends daylight hours slowly crawling through fallen leaves hunting micro-prey. At night, it climbs low twigs near the ground to sleep.

Morphology: Extremely tiny, reaching total adult lengths of only 2.5 to 3.0 cm including the tail. Brownish, leaf-like body camouflage. Tail is not prehensile.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Terrarium Setup: Small, well-ventilated enclosure of about 30x30x30 cm. Provide a thick layer of dry oak leaves, thin twigs, and damp moss on the substrate.

Lighting and Heating: Keep temperatures cool: day temp 20-23°C, night temp 16-18°C. Avoid hot basking spots. Provide low-intensity UVB lighting.

Humidity and Hydration: Maintain high humidity (70-85%). Mist lightly once or twice a day. The chameleon drinks only water droplets from leaves.

Feeding and Supplementation: Requires very small live food such as springtails, fruit flies, and pinhead crickets. Dust food with fine calcium powder once a week.

Compatibility: Housed singly or in pairs. Due to extreme stress sensitivity, keep away from other active or larger species.

Health and Common Diseases: Fragile species. Do not handle unless necessary. Dehydration and heat stress (above 25°C) are major causes of mortality.
