Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Indo-West Pacific, from Thailand and Indonesia to southern Japan and northern Australia. Found in shallow coastal reefs, mangroves, and turbid estuaries at depths of 1 to 25 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Part of the Siganidae family. Features an oval-shaped, laterally compressed body with small downward-pointing mouth. Dorsal and anal spines are venomous. Grows up to 42 cm (16.5 inches).

Social Behavior: Peaceful but territorial toward other rabbitfishes. Juveniles form schools in mangroves, while adults are found singly or in stable pairs on outer reefs.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Silvery-blue body covered with closely spaced golden-orange spots, with a large yellow blotch on the back below the soft dorsal fin. No visible sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Minimum tank size of 800 liters (210 gallons) with open swimming area. Matured live rock with natural algae is ideal. Keep the aquarium covered as they can jump.

Diet and Feeding: Herbivorous/omnivorous. Requires a diet rich in vegetable matter: nori sheets, spirulina, and herbivore pellets. Supplement with frozen mysis and brine shrimp.

Water Quality: Maintain stable parameters: temperature 22-30°C (72-86°F), pH 8.0-8.5, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, and KH 8-12. Tolerant of salinity fluctuations due to estuarine origin.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Reef-safe with caution; may nip at soft corals (Sinularia) and LPS corals if underfed. Excellent tankmate for active surgeonfish.

Aquarium Breeding: Unreported in private aquariums. Widely bred in commercial aquaculture facilities using hormone induction.

Risks and Diseases: Possesses highly venomous spines on its dorsal and anal fins; handle with extreme caution. Avoid netting, as spines easily tangle. Disease-resistant.
