Imitator Cory
Corydoras imitator
The name 'imitator' is due to the extraordinary mimicry of the C. adolfoi livery (orange spot and black back), but its snout is clearly more elongated (Lineage 1).

Description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Endemic species to northern Brazil (upper Rio Negro). Typically resides in blackwaters generated by tannins from decomposing leaves: feeble currents, very little light, flooded forests, and peaty substrate.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Formidable example of Müllerian mimicry. Belongs to the "long-snouted" group and has developed a color pattern identical to the sympatric Corydoras adolfoi (short-snouted). Reaches 6.5 cm (2.5 inches), showing a more sloping and aerodynamic cranial profile than its cousin.
Social Behavior: Essential gregariousness (groups of 6-8 and up). In nature, it swims mixed with schools of C. adolfoi to confuse predators. Extremely shy but hardworking, spends all its time "plowing" the sands with its long snout.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Unmistakable livery: creamy-silvery body, crossed by two black bands: a vertical "mask" over the eyes and a long and thick black stripe on the back ("skunk" pattern). A fluorescent orange/gold spot stands out behind the nape. Dimorphism limited to female abdominal roundness.
Care and observations
Aquarium Setup: The substrate must absolutely be impalpable inert sand to avoid bacterial necrosis to the whiskers. The tank, planted at the edges, requires massive wood, roots, and Ketapang leaves to release humic acids and darken the environment.
Diet and Feeding: Specialized in underground micro-predation. The diet must never be occasional: regularly serve sinking tablets for carnivorous fish mixed with frozen red Bloodworms, tubifex, and microworms to sometimes inject under the first layer of sand.
Water Quality: The native blackwaters demand an acidic-neutral environment (pH 6.0-7.2) and low hardness (GH 2-12). Temperature 22-26°C (72-79°F). The imitator is intolerant and perishes rapidly in the presence of ammonia or chronically rotting (anoxic) substrates.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Magnificent display fish in Rio Negro biotopes. Ideal tankmate for Dicrossus, small Apistogramma, Nannostomus, and Paracheirodon axelrodi. Voracious Cichlids (e.g., Geophagus) are banned as they would inhibit the feeding of this calm cory.
Aquarium Reproduction: Complicated but feasible via mimetic monsoon stimuli (large cool water changes). T-position reproduction with the hatching of huge and highly sticky eggs. They do not present parental care; removed breeders guarantee high survival rates.
Risks and Diseases: Abrasion from rough bottoms is very dangerous: the subsequent bacteriosis of the long barbels leads to atrophy and death. Aggressive therapies based on chemical drugs or temporary salinity in the tank are strongly discouraged.
