Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to Panama, specifically from the Río Colubre basin in Bocas del Toro. It inhabits tropical lowland forests and secondary humid forests, relying heavily on epiphytic bromeliads for shelter and reproduction.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Belonging to the family Dendrobatidae. A tiny poison frog, with adults reaching only 1.8 to 2.5 cm in length. This morph features a distinct color pattern characteristic of the Río Colubre population. Digits are slender, adapted for climbing. Males possess a dark, expandable vocal sac under the throat.
Behavior and Habits: Diurnal, active, and agile. Males call from elevated leaves to establish territories and attract females. The female displays complex parental care: carrying tadpoles on her back to deposit them individually in water-filled bromeliad leaf axils and returning daily to feed them with unfertilized eggs.
Morphology: Difficult to distinguish visually. Females are slightly larger and rounder when gravid. Males possess a vocal sac under the throat, which appears as a slightly darker and looser skin patch, and are the only ones that call.
Cuidado, criação e companheiros de tanque
Terrarium Setup: Requires a vertically oriented terrarium (minimum 45x45x60 cm) with live plants, moss, and climbing branches. Live bromeliads (Neoregelia) are mandatory; their leaf axils store the water required for tadpole rearing.
Lighting and Heating: Maintain daytime temperatures between 24 and 26°C, tolerating short peaks of 27-28°C. Night temperatures should drop to 22-23°C. High-intensity lighting is needed for plant health, combined with a low-level UVB light source.
Humidity and Hydration: Requires very high humidity (85-100%). Their small size makes them vulnerable to rapid dehydration. Use an automated misting system to spray the terrarium frequently. Ensure that the central cups of the bromeliads remain filled with water.
Feeding and Supplementation: Feeds exclusively on micro-insects due to its small size. Provide springtails (collembola) and Drosophila melanogaster fruit flies. Dust all prey at every feeding with a high-quality calcium, vitamin A, and D3 supplement to prevent nutritional deficiencies.
Compatibility: Intraspecific competition is intense. Best kept in single pairs (1.1). Keeping multiple males or females in a standard enclosure leads to stress and aggressive wrestling, where subordinate frogs are chased and denied food. Do not mix with other species.
Health and Common Diseases: Fragile species suited for experienced keepers. Their high metabolism means they cannot tolerate fasting for more than 48 hours. Never handle with bare hands, as their skin is highly permeable to toxins, soaps, and oils. Ensure a continuous culture of live food is maintained.

Perfil anfíbio
- Dieta
- Insectivore
- Their natural diet consists of highly specialized micro-invertebrates like mites and ants, but in captivity, they thrive on a diet of flightless fruit flies and springtails. Because of their incredibly small size, they require the smallest available prey items. Frequent, daily feedings are necessary due to their fast metabolisms. All feeder insects must be dusted with vitamin supplements to maintain their vibrant health.
- Expectativa de vida
- 10-15 years
- Tamanho adulto
- 2 cm
- Estilo de vida/Microhabitat
- Terrestrial
- They are predominantly arboreal compared to other small dart frogs, heavily utilizing the vertical space. A terrarium dense with bromeliads is an absolute requirement for them to thrive and breed. They spend substantial time perched on leaves surveying their surroundings for food and rivals. High humidity and stable tropical temperatures must be maintained constantly.
- Ciclo de atividades
- Diurnal
- As diurnal amphibians, they are constantly active during the day hunting and defending territory. Morning hours often trigger the most vocalizations from males. They prefer to forage while the tank is well-lit and humidity is high. At night, they seek refuge deep within bromeliad leaves or tucked away in dense vegetation.
- Socialidade
- Solitary
- They are highly territorial, and males will frequently engage in wrestling matches if housed together in small enclosures. Despite their small stature, they are bold, active, and highly visible throughout the day. Their sharp, chirping calls can be heard frequently as males establish boundaries and court females. They are best kept in pairs or harems with ample space and visual barriers.
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- This species exhibits fascinating obligate egg-feeding behavior where the female feeds her tadpoles unfertilized eggs. Males fiercely defend a calling territory to attract mates into bromeliads or leaf litter. After eggs hatch, the female carries the tadpoles to individual water-filled bromeliad axils. Raising the young requires a well-established planted tank, as artificial rearing is extremely difficult.
- Toxicidade
- Toxic
- Wild Rio Colubre morphs extract complex alkaloids from their specialized diet of neotropical ants and mites, storing these toxins in their skin glands as a potent defense mechanism. Captive-bred individuals, however, are raised on a diet of non-toxic domestic insects and completely lack the ability to synthesize these toxins. Consequently, they are entirely harmless and safe to keep in home terrariums.
- Estágio de vida
- Neotenic
- The tadpoles are completely aquatic and rely on a unique diet of unfertilized eggs provided specifically by the mother. Metamorphs are exceptionally tiny and require a very damp environment filled with abundant, tiny prey like springtails to survive their first critical weeks. Adult frogs are robust, highly active, and display the striking coloration characteristic of the Rio Colubre morph, utilizing the entire terrarium space.
- Tolerância de tratamento
- Display only
- Direct skin contact with these frogs must be strictly avoided, as their highly permeable skin easily absorbs harmful salts, oils, and chemical residues from human hands. Handling induces extreme stress and can easily compromise their delicate mucous coat, leading to severe health issues or bacterial infections. If a frog must be captured, it should be gently coaxed into a clean plastic cup or handled with wet, powder-free gloves.
- Brumação
- The Rio Colubre morph originates from constant tropical environments and does not undergo brumation or tolerate cold temperatures. They require a stable environment with temperatures between 72°F and 80°F and high humidity levels throughout the entire year. Any significant temperature drop will severely disrupt their metabolism, leading to a compromised immune system and potential fatality.
- Muda
- Periodic
- Shedding is a vital and frequent process that allows the frog to grow and maintain optimal skin health and permeability. The shedding process is remarkably efficient; the frog twists and stretches to break the old skin, pushes it towards its mouth, and ingests it to recycle nutrients. Providing a consistently humid environment is paramount to ensure the skin sheds completely, as dry conditions can cause dangerous retained sheds.
