Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to the western Andean slopes of Risaralda and Chocó, Colombia. Dwell in the hot, humid lowland rainforest floors among wet leaf litter and roots. Endemic to the western slopes of the Andes in Colombia, specifically within the departments of Chocó and Risaralda, where it inhabits the humid leaf litter of tropical rainforests.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Family Dendrobatidae. Commonly called the Black-legged Poison Frog. Close relative of P. terribilis. In the wild, it possesses high levels of batrachotoxin. Captive-bred individuals lose their toxicity due to a different diet. Belongs to the family Dendrobatidae. In the wild, it is the second most toxic animal on Earth due to batrachotoxins derived from its diet, though captive-bred individuals are completely non-toxic.
Behavior and Habits: Extremely bold, diurnal, and curious. They sit in the open instead of hiding. Males emit a loud, metallic, bird-like trill during breeding season. Displaying bold and active diurnal habits, they are less reclusive than other dart frogs and spend much of their time foraging on the forest floor or climbing low foliage.
Morphology: Large and robust for a poison frog, reaching up to 4 cm. Vibrant solid yellow, orange, or gold body with contrasting black or dark blue legs and underbelly. Females are larger and plumper; males are vocal. The dorsum is a striking uniform gold, yellow, or orange color, while the limbs contrast sharply with dark blue, grey, or black coloration.

Terrarium Setup: Horizontal tropical terrarium (minimum 60x45x45 cm). Provide a deep drainage layer, coco-fiber substrate covered in a thick layer of oak or ketapang leaf litter, flat stones, and coconut huts. Sturdy low plants are recommended. A horizontal tropical vivarium (minimum 60x45x40 cm) is required, featuring a drainage layer, moist soil substrate, thick leaf litter, and live plants such as bromeliads.
Lighting and Heating: Warm, humid Colombian climate. Keep temperatures at 24-26°C. Avoid temperatures above 28°C. Night drop to 21°C. Provide a low 5% UVB source and bright LED lights. Provide low-intensity UVB lighting (2.0 or 5.0) alongside bright LED fixtures to support live plant growth and promote natural behavior and calcium absorption.
Humidity and Hydration: Extremely high humidity (80-90%) with good ventilation to prevent stagnant air. Spray daily with dechlorinated water. Avoid waterlogged soil. Maintain high relative humidity levels of 80-95% using automatic misting systems, ensuring the substrate remains damp but never soggy or waterlogged.
Feeding and Supplementation: Highly voracious. Feed large fruit flies (D. hydei), micro crickets, and small roaches. Dust prey with calcium, D3, and vitamin A three times a week. Offer a continuous supply of live micro-insects, mainly wingless fruit flies (Drosophila), springtails, and pinhead crickets dusted with calcium and vitamin D3.
Compatibility: Highly social. Can be kept in large, peaceful groups of the same species. Do not mix with other species (especially P. terribilis) to prevent hybridization. Can be kept in small groups if space permits, as they are relatively social. Males will establish calling territories but rarely engage in physical combat.
Health and Common Diseases: Never handle with bare hands; skin secretions from humans can harm them, and they are highly sensitive to stress. Prone to red-leg disease if kept in dirty, stagnant conditions. Keep temperatures between 20-25 °C; values exceeding 27 °C can be fatal. Provide a shallow dish of fresh, dechlorinated water daily for hydration.

- In its native habitat, Phyllobates bicolor secretes potent lipophilic alkaloids from its skin as a defense mechanism against predators. These toxins are acquired entirely through their specialized diet of toxic wild arthropods. However, captive-bred individuals, or wild-caught specimens kept in captivity for extended periods, completely lose their toxicity due to the lack of these specific dietary precursors. Despite being harmless in captivity, it is always recommended to wear disposable gloves when handling them. This precaution is primarily to protect the frog's sensitive, permeable skin from the natural oils, salts, and potential chemicals present on human hands.

- For Phyllobates bicolor, the life cycle begins with a small clutch of eggs laid in a dark, humid terrestrial or phytotelm (plant water) location. Once the eggs develop and hatch, the resulting tadpoles are meticulously transported on the back of a parent to a suitable rearing pool. The tadpoles develop in these small bodies of water over the course of two to three months. Following metamorphosis, tiny, fully-formed froglets emerge onto land, requiring consistently high humidity to survive. These froglets are extremely small and must be fed large quantities of microscopic prey, such as springtails, until they grow larger.

- Handling of Phyllobates bicolor should be strictly avoided unless absolutely necessary for health inspections or transferring enclosures. Like all amphibians, they possess highly permeable, sensitive skin that quickly absorbs toxins, salts, and oils from human hands, which can be fatal. If a transfer is required, the safest and least stressful method is to gently coax the frog into a clean plastic catch cup rather than using your hands. If physical contact is entirely unavoidable, you must wear powder-free nitrile gloves thoroughly moistened with dechlorinated water. Even then, the interaction should be kept as brief as possible to minimize the severe physiological stress handling causes.

In their natural habitat, they experience relatively stable temperatures year-round, with environmental shifts primarily driven by wet and dry seasons rather than extreme cold. In captivity, it is critical to maintain steady, optimal temperatures and high humidity levels throughout the entire year. Exposing these amphibians to significant temperature drops can severely compromise their immune system and lead to respiratory or digestive failures. While a slight reduction in humidity and a few degrees of temperature drop can simulate a dry season to cycle breeders, severe cooling must be completely avoided.

- Like all amphibians, the Phyllobates bicolor undergoes a regular molting process to shed its outer layer of skin as it grows and to maintain skin health. This shedding process occurs frequently but is usually very rapid and highly secretive, meaning keepers rarely witness it occurring. The frog will typically contort its body, repeatedly open and close its mouth, and use its limbs to push the loosened skin forward over its head. Once the shed is removed, the frog will almost always consume the old skin to recycle valuable nutrients and proteins. Maintaining ideal humidity levels in the terrarium is paramount, as dry conditions can cause the skin to adhere, leading to deadly infections or restricted blood flow.
