Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic strictly to the moist, high-altitude rainforests of eastern Madagascar, particularly near Ambatovy. It is a highly arboreal species that dwells on moss-covered trunks, vines, and branches between 2 and 4 meters above the forest floor.
Taxonomy and Genetics: A medium to large gecko reaching over 15 cm in length, including its broad, flat, leaf-like tail. Its skin features spiky dermal flaps and a bark-like texture colored in shades of mossy green, brown, and grey, allowing it to blend seamlessly with lichen and cork bark.
Behavior and Habits: Strictly nocturnal and arboreal. During the day, it sleeps head-down on tree trunks, flattening its body and dermal fringes against the bark to eliminate shadows. At night, it becomes an active ambush predator, catching insects with its wide jaws.
Morphology: Males and females exhibit distinct differences. Mature males possess prominent hemipenal bulges at the base of the tail and are generally more slender than adult females, which have wider pelvic areas.
Cuidado, criação e companheiros de tanque
Terrarium Setup: Requires a tall, well-ventilated vertical terrarium (minimum 60x45x90 cm). Provide thick, rough branches, cork bark tubes, and live plants with sturdy foliage. Ensure the back and side walls are covered in cork bark sheets to facilitate climbing.
Lighting and Heating: Prefers cool, temperate conditions. Maintain daytime temperatures between 22°C and 25°C. Avoid temperatures above 28°C, which can cause fatal heat stroke. Nights should cool down to 18-20°C. Low-level UVB (5%) is beneficial.
Humidity and Hydration: Requires high humidity (75-90%) with daily heavy misting at night. Good air circulation is critical to prevent mold. They will drink water droplets from the glass and leaves; do not use stagnant bowls.
Feeding and Supplementation: Insectivorous. Feed on crickets, locusts, and roaches offered in elevated cups or on branches. Dust all prey items with calcium at each feeding, and add D3 and Vitamin A supplements weekly.
Compatibility: Sensitive and solitary. Best housed individually or in established pairs. Do not house males together, and avoid crowded setups, as stress can cause rapid decline. Keep their enclosure in a quiet, dark room.
Health and Common Diseases: Highly vulnerable to dehydration, leading to shedding issues around the eyes and toes. Ensure proper ventilation to prevent skin infections. Handle as little as possible to avoid skin tears or tail autotomy.

Perfil de réptil
- Dieta
- Insectivore
- Uroplatus pietschmanni requires a well-balanced diet to maintain optimal health and vitality in captivity. Its feeding regimen should closely mimic its natural dietary habits in the wild, including proper vitamin and mineral supplementation. Providing appropriate portion sizes and maintaining a regular feeding schedule are crucial for its digestive health.
- Tamanho adulto
- 15 cm
- Estilo de vida/Microhabitat
- Arboreal
- Uroplatus pietschmanni has adapted to a specific lifestyle that dictates the type of habitat it requires. It relies heavily on proper environmental enrichment, climbing structures, or burrowing substrates depending on its natural adaptations. Creating a terrarium that reflects these requirements allows the animal to thrive and minimizes captivity-related stress.
- Ciclo de atividades
- Nocturnal
- The activity pattern of Uroplatus pietschmanni is largely dictated by its natural rhythms and environmental cues. Knowing whether it is diurnal, nocturnal, or crepuscular is essential for providing appropriate lighting and heating schedules. Proper management of these cycles ensures the animal remains active, healthy, and exhibits natural foraging behaviors.
- Socialidade
- Solitary
- Uroplatus pietschmanni exhibits a variety of fascinating behaviors that can be observed both in the wild and in an enclosure. These behaviors range from territorial displays and communication methods to foraging strategies. Understanding these actions helps keepers provide a more enriching environment and detect any signs of stress early on.
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- The reproductive cycle of Uroplatus pietschmanni involves specific environmental triggers such as temperature and humidity changes. Successful breeding requires careful conditioning of both the male and female to ensure they are healthy. Once eggs or live young are produced, specialized care and incubation are often necessary for a high success rate.
- Tolerância de tratamento
- Expert only
- Handling Uroplatus pietschmanni should always be approached with care and respect for the animal's boundaries. Frequent or improper handling can lead to significant stress, defensive behaviors, or even injury to both the keeper and the pet. It is best to keep handling sessions brief and allow the animal to settle into its enclosure afterward.
- Brumação
- Brumation in Uroplatus pietschmanni is a natural physiological process often triggered by seasonal drops in temperature and daylight. During this period, the animal will significantly reduce its activity, appetite, and metabolic rate. Keepers must carefully monitor temperatures and hydration to ensure a safe and healthy brumation cycle.
- Muda
- Periodic
- The molting process is a critical time for Uroplatus pietschmanni as it sheds its old skin to accommodate growth and renewal. Proper humidity levels and access to a humid hide are essential to prevent retained sheds, especially around the toes and tail. Careful observation during this period helps prevent complications and ensures a smooth shedding cycle.
