Species description

Lomariopsis cf. lineata, commonly known among aquarists as 'Süsswassertang' (German for freshwater seaweed, though it is actually a fern), is native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia. In its natural habitat, it grows in shaded forest streams, clean springs, and waterfalls, anchoring itself to wet rocks, submerged roots, and organic debris. It lives constantly submerged in cool, soft, and constantly moving waters, sheltered from direct sunlight by the dense forest canopy. It belongs to the Lomariopsidaceae family.

Care, breeding and tankmates

The main risk is the accumulation of organic debris within the dense cushion, which can suffocate the inner parts of the plant and cause rot. Additionally, due to its compact habit, it is prone to hair algae invasions, which are difficult to remove without damaging the delicate thallus. Thrives in soft to moderately hard water, with a pH between 5.0 and 7.5 and KH between 0 and 14 dKH. The ideal temperature range is between 15°C and 30°C, preferring medium temperatures around 22-25°C. Avoid excessively high temperatures for long periods.

Plant profile

Placement
Foreground

Optimal placement for Lomariopsis cf. lineata is as a epiphyte on hardscape. Careful positioning allows it to receive adequate light and flow. This strategic placement ensures it does not overshadow smaller plants while exhibiting its best form.

Botanical form
Epiphyte

Botanically, Lomariopsis cf. lineata is characterized as a fern gametophyte. Its unique physiological traits make it a fascinating addition to the ecosystem. The leaf structure and overall form adapt closely to its submerged environment.

Growth
Slow

The growth rate of Lomariopsis cf. lineata is generally considered slow. This steady development necessitates a well-planned maintenance schedule. Adjusting environmental factors can slightly speed up or slow down this rate.

Substrate
None

Lomariopsis cf. lineata, commonly known as Süsswassertang, does not possess true roots and does not require any substrate to grow. Instead of planting it in soil, it thrives when loosely attached to hardscape elements like driftwood or porous rocks using fishing line or cotton thread. Over time, it develops specialized rhizoid-like structures that gently grip textured surfaces, creating dense, cascading mounds. As an epiphyte, it absorbs all essential nutrients directly from the water column rather than the substrate.

Column fertilization
Recommended

For column fertilization, Lomariopsis cf. lineata prefers a lean dosing regimen. Liquid fertilizers are efficiently absorbed through its submerged surfaces. Consistent daily or weekly dosing ensures steady nutrient availability.

Root fertilization
None

Regarding root fertilization, it is generally false that Lomariopsis cf. lineata requires a nutrient-rich substrate. A quality aquasoil or root tabs can significantly boost its long-term health. The root system plays an active role in stabilizing the plant and absorbing minerals.

Trimming
Occasional

Maintenance for Lomariopsis cf. lineata primarily involves thinning the mass. Using sharp aquascaping scissors ensures clean cuts that heal quickly. Regular pruning encourages a more compact and aesthetically pleasing form.

Propagation
Cuttings

Propagation of Lomariopsis cf. lineata is typically achieved through division. This method is straightforward and yields a high success rate. Newly propagated sections should be planted with sufficient space to establish themselves.

Sensitivity
Moderate

Lomariopsis cf. lineata is particularly sensitive to algae growth on leaves. Sudden changes in water chemistry can trigger negative reactions or melting. Maintaining a stable environment is the best preventative measure against these issues.

Layout role
group, Epiphyte, Midground, Nano, Foreground

In an aquascape, Lomariopsis cf. lineata serves excellently as a hardscape accent. Its visual characteristics draw the eye and create depth within the layout. It pairs well with contrasting textures to enhance the overall composition.
