Artbeschreibung
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Apistogramma cinilabra is endemic to an extremely restricted range within the Loreto Province of northern Peru, inside the Amazon River basin. It inhabits small forest streams (igarapés) characterized by slow-flowing or static blackwater. These environments are heavily shaded by the dense rainforest canopy, showing highly acidic, soft water rich in organic tannins released by deep leaf litter lining the stream beds.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belonging to the family Cichlidae and the subfamily Geophaginae, classified under the genus Apistogramma. This dwarf cichlid is small, with males reaching a maximum adult length of 5 to 6 centimeters, and females remaining smaller, at about 3.5 to 4 centimeters. The species name 'cinilabra' is derived from Latin, translating to 'ash-grey lips', in reference to the distinctive coloration of the male's mouthparts.
Social Behavior: Displays complex social behaviors with a haremic breeding structure, where a single dominant male territory overlaps with the smaller territories of multiple females. They are territorial during breeding cycles but are otherwise shy and peaceful. Males will exhibit strong territorial aggression toward other male conspecifics, requiring visual barriers in the enclosure.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Sexual dimorphism is highly pronounced. Males are larger with extended dorsal and anal fin rays, exhibiting shimmering blue-grey body coloration and characteristic ash-grey lips and throat. Females are smaller, normally displaying a drab yellowish-grey body with a black longitudinal stripe, which turns into a vibrant lemon-yellow color with bold black markings during brood care.
Pflege, Zucht und Mitbewohner
Aquarium Setup: Requires a specialized setup of at least 80-100 liters for a single harem (one male and two to three females). The substrate must consist of fine, dark sand, covered with a thick layer of dried leaf litter (such as Indian Almond or oak leaves) to leach tannins and provide cover. Furnish the tank with driftwood roots and small breeding caves like coconut shells or clay pots.
Diet and Feeding: A selective benthic micro-predator. In the wild, it feeds on small invertebrates and insect larvae found in leaf litter. In the aquarium, they frequently reject dry commercial foods. They should be fed a diet of live or high-quality frozen foods, such as freshly hatched brine shrimp (nauplii), daphnia, cyclops, and copepods to maintain health and induce spawning.
Water Quality: One of the most demanding species regarding water chemistry. Requires extremely soft and acidic conditions: pH of 4.5 to 6.0, KH of 0-2, GH below 4, and very low electrical conductivity (ideally under 50 microsiemens). The water temperature should remain stable between 24 °C and 28 °C. The use of reverse osmosis water pre-filtered with peat or humic substances is essential.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Can be housed with small, peaceful dither fish that swim in the upper layers of the aquarium, such as pencilfish (Nannostomus) or dwarf tetras (Axelrodia). Avoid keeping them with large, aggressive fish, territorial catfish, or active bottom dwellers that could invade their breeding caves. Do not house more than one male unless the tank is very large.
Aquarium Breeding: Cave spawners. The female lures the male into her selected cave, deposits her eggs on the ceiling, and guards them exclusively, driving the male away immediately after fertilization. The eggs hatch in 48-72 hours. The fry become free-swimming in 5-6 days and must be fed immediately with live rotifers or artemia nauplii.
Risks and Diseases: Highly sensitive to dissolved organic waste, sudden parameter changes, and bacterial infections. Nitrate levels exceeding 10 mg/L can cause stress and death. They are prone to fungal infections if the water hardness is too high or the pH rises above neutral. Meticulous aquarium hygiene and frequent small water changes are mandatory.

Fischprofil
- Temperament
- Territorial
- Overall, they exhibit a peaceful demeanor towards other species, but they are known to be territorial among their own kind. During the breeding season, both sexes become fiercely protective of their spawning sites and fry, potentially showing aggression to any intruders. Outside of breeding, they are somewhat shy and require a complex environment with plenty of hiding spaces to feel secure. Creating distinct visual barriers helps manage their territorial nature.
- Diät
- Carnivore
- In their natural habitat, they are micro-predators that sift through the substrate for small invertebrates, insect larvae, and zooplankton. In captivity, they should be offered a varied and high-quality diet consisting of sinking micro-pellets and flakes. Supplementing their diet regularly with live or frozen foods like daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and bloodworms will promote optimal health and vibrant coloration. Variety is key to preventing nutritional deficiencies.
- Lebenserwartung
- 2-4 years
- Erwachsenengröße
- 6 cm
- Geschlechterverhältnis
- Pair
- In a suitably sized aquarium, they are best maintained in a harem configuration consisting of one dominant male and several females. If the tank is on the smaller side, maintaining a single compatible pair is the safest approach to minimize intraspecific aggression. Keeping multiple males usually requires a very large footprint with complex hardscape to break lines of sight and establish distinct territories. Proper sex ratios are vital for a peaceful tank.
- Fütterungsfrequenz
- Twice daily
- It is highly recommended to feed them small portions once or twice daily to maintain their metabolism and overall well-being. Care must be taken to only offer an amount they can completely consume within a couple of minutes to avoid fouling the water. Overfeeding is a common mistake that can lead to severe water quality issues. Fasting the fish for one day per week can also help clear their digestive tract.
- Bioload
- Low to Medium
- This species has a relatively low bioload compared to larger cichlids, making it suitable for appropriately sized setups. However, they are highly sensitive to deteriorating water conditions and elevated nitrates. Maintaining pristine water quality through adequate filtration and regular water changes is absolutely crucial for their long-term health. A heavily planted tank can also help absorb excess nutrients and keep the environment stable.
- Fluss
- Stagnant
- Originating from slow-moving streams, backwaters, and sluggish tributaries, they strongly prefer gentle water flow in the aquarium. Strong currents will cause them undue stress and force them to expend unnecessary energy just to maintain their position. Filtration should be baffled if necessary to provide a calm environment, particularly near the substrate where they spend most of their time. Mimicking this natural calm flow is essential for their comfort.
- Sprungrisiko
- No
- Reproduktion
- Oviparous
- They are typical cave spawners, utilizing secluded crevices, leaf litter, or natural hollows to lay their eggs. The female assumes the primary responsibility of guarding the eggs and the subsequent fry, often becoming highly reclusive. The male's role involves defending a larger peripheral territory against any perceived threats. Providing plenty of hiding spots like coconut caves, PVC pipes, and dense vegetation is critical for successful breeding.
- Kompatibilität & Tankkameraden
- Verify
- They are best kept in a species-specific aquarium or a peaceful community tank with small, non-aggressive dither fish like tetras or rasboras. Fast-swimming or boisterous tank mates should be avoided as they will easily outcompete this species for food and induce stress. Bottom-dwelling species such as Corydoras might face territorial disputes, especially if breeding behaviors commence. Careful selection of tank mates is necessary to ensure a harmonious environment.
- Tankfüllstand
- Bottom
- These fish primarily inhabit the lower third of the water column, spending the vast majority of their day navigating the substrate. They are often seen foraging among leaf litter, driftwood, and plant roots in search of food. They rarely venture into the upper levels of the aquarium unless enticed by feeding or if they lack sufficient cover below. A well-structured bottom layout is highly appreciated.
