Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to the swampy, low-elevation montane rainforests of northeastern Madagascar (An'Ala and Fierenana regions). They inhabit highly humid, muddy forest floors under dense leaf litter.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Belonging to the family Mantellidae. Commonly known as the Beautiful Mantella. It shares many physiological traits with Mantella baroni and Mantella madagascariensis but can be distinguished by the specific red-brown and metallic highlights on its flanks.
Behavior and Habits: Diurnal and terrestrial. They spend the day foraging in the leaf litter. Shy and alert, they quickly dive under leaves or logs when approached. Males produce high-pitched, chirping calls during the breeding season.
Morphology: A small frog, reaching 2.5–3.0 cm in length. Females are larger and noticeably wider when carrying eggs. Males are smaller, more slender, and possess vocal sacs. They lack large adhesive pads on their toes.
Cuidado, criação e companheiros de tanque
Terrarium Setup: A horizontal forest terrarium (minimum 60x45x45 cm) is recommended. Use a bioactive soil mix topped with a thick layer of damp leaf litter and moss. Include flat cork bark hides and broad-leafed plants (Pothos). A wide, shallow water section is necessary.
Lighting and Heating: Keep at cool temperatures of 20–23°C, dropping to 16–18°C at night. Temperatures above 25–26°C are dangerous and can be fatal. Provide a low-output (5%) UVB source to support coloration and bone development.
Humidity and Hydration: Maintain high humidity levels of 80–90%. Spray the terrarium daily with clean, dechlorinated water. Ensure excellent ventilation to prevent stagnant air and skin pathogens.
Feeding and Supplementation: Strictly insectivorous. Feed small insects such as fruit flies, springtails, dwarf isopods, and pinhead crickets. Dust food with calcium and vitamins containing D3 three times a week.
Compatibility: Peaceful and highly gregarious. Ideal for keeping in small groups of their own species. Do not house with larger, predatory species or mixed amphibian groups.
Health and Common Diseases: Heat exhaustion is the main threat. Poor hygiene can lead to bacterial skin infections (red leg syndrome). Handle only when necessary with wet, powder-free gloves.

Perfil anfíbio
- Dieta
- Insectivore
- Mantella pulchra is an insectivorous amphibian that forages constantly for tiny prey in its humid forest habitat. Wild populations feed heavily on specific ants and mites that provide the chemical precursors for their toxic skin secretions. For captive specimens, a staple diet of cultured fruit flies, springtails, and dwarf white isopods is highly recommended. To ensure optimal health and prevent metabolic bone disease, all prey items must be regularly dusted with a quality calcium and multivitamin powder.

- Estilo de vida/Microhabitat
- Terrestrial
- The Beautiful mantella inhabits the leaf litter of primary and secondary tropical rainforests in northeastern Madagascar. They are a ground-dwelling species that thrives in dense, moist undergrowth near water sources. Their small size allows them to navigate the complex microhabitats of the forest floor with ease. An ideal captive setup involves a heavily planted, bioactive terrarium with a robust drainage layer and plenty of leaf litter for exploration and security.
- Ciclo de atividades
- Diurnal
- Mantella pulchra is a diurnal frog, displaying the highest levels of activity during the daylight hours. They are particularly active during the cooler, humid hours of the morning and late afternoon. High humidity is a critical driver of their activity; a dry environment will cause them to become lethargic and hide. In captivity, frequent automated misting during the day will stimulate natural foraging and breeding behaviors.
- Socialidade
- Solitary
- This species is highly active and visually striking, utilizing its vivid green, black, and brown coloration to warn off predators. They are constantly on the move during the day, searching for food among the leaves and low vegetation. Males use a series of short, buzzing calls to claim territory and attract females, particularly after rain showers. While generally terrestrial, they may occasionally climb low-lying ferns or branches in search of prey or better calling positions.
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- The reproductive cycle of the Beautiful mantella is intricately linked to seasonal rainfall patterns in northeastern Madagascar. Females deposit small clutches of eggs in damp, terrestrial hiding spots, often near the edges of swamps or slow-flowing streams. The eggs are left unattended, and upon hatching during heavy downpours, the tadpoles are flushed into the nearby aquatic environments. The tadpoles are mostly herbivorous, grazing on algae and detritus until they emerge as fully formed, miniature frogs.
- Toxicidade
- Harmless
- The Beautiful Mantella secretes alkaloid toxins from its skin to deter predators. These toxins are sequestered from its natural diet of specific ants and mites. In captivity, without these specific prey items, they lose their toxicity. They should still be handled minimally to protect their skin.
- Estágio de vida
- Metamorphosis
- The life cycle begins as an egg laid on land, developing into an aquatic tadpole. The tadpole stage lasts several weeks on a herbivorous diet. Metamorphosis brings a shift to a terrestrial lifestyle. Adults can live for several years, maintaining active behavior.
- Tolerância de tratamento
- Display only
- The Beautiful Mantella is considered a display-only species. Their delicate skin is highly permeable and easily damaged by the natural oils, salts, and chemicals on human hands. Handling induces severe stress and should be strictly avoided except during essential health checks or enclosure transfers.
- Brumação
- The Beautiful Mantella originates from relatively stable tropical or subtropical environments and does not undergo a true brumation. They require consistently warm and stable temperatures year-round to maintain proper digestion, metabolic activity, and overall immune health.
- Muda
- Periodic
- High ambient humidity (typically 70-90%) is critical for the Beautiful Mantella. Like most amphibians, they routinely shed their outer layer of skin and rely on moisture to prevent it from sticking or restricting movement. They often consume the shed skin for nutrient recycling.
