Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Inhabits the humid, tropical primary forests and mountain streams of Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua, and Honduras. They are strictly arboreal, living in dense vegetation and broad leaves directly hanging over fast-flowing, oxygen-rich mountain rivers.
Taxonomy and Genetics: A member of the family Centrolenidae. It has a tiny, delicate body (2.5-3.5 cm) with long limbs and large adhesive toe pads. The dorsal skin is olive-green or emerald green with a distinctive grainy, rough texture (granulosa). Its belly is completely transparent, revealing the heart, stomach, and liver.
Behavior and Habits: Secretive, nocturnal, and arboreal. During the day, they remain completely motionless under leaves, utilizing their translucent body to blend in. At night, they active jump and climb among branches. Males call with a sharp "tick-tick" sound from overhanging branches to attract females during the rainy season.
Morphology: Females are slightly larger and rounder, especially during the breeding season when their mature green eggs can be seen through their transparent flanks. Males are smaller, more slender, and call actively.

Terrarium Setup: Requires a vertical, tall terrarium or paludarium (minimum 45x45x60 cm) representing a tropical rainforest canopy. Furnish with branches and large-leafed live plants like Philodendron, Monstera, or Anthurium for daytime resting. Include a clean, deep water section with slow current.
Lighting and Heating: Prefers warm, humid tropical temperatures between 25 and 27°C. Avoid excessive heat; temperatures above 28°C can cause fatal heat stress. Provide low-intensity lighting with a 5% UVB tube to prevent metabolic bone disease.
Humidity and Hydration: Maintain high humidity levels (80-90%) with excellent ventilation. Stagnant air and wet, dirty conditions are highly lethal, causing skin rot and red leg syndrome. Mist daily with clean, declorinated or reverse osmosis water.
Feeding and Supplementation: Strictly insectivorous. Feed on very small live insects such as flightless fruit flies (Drosophila hydei), micro-crickets, and springtails. Supplement their food three times a week with a quality calcium and vitamin D3 powder.
Compatibility: Peaceful and gregarious. They can be housed in small groups of their own species if the terrarium is large enough. Do not house them with other species or larger frogs that could easily consume them.
Health and Common Diseases: Extremely delicate. Never handle them with bare hands as skin oils and soap residues are toxic. Snout rubbing can occur if the frog jumps against glass in panic, leading to fatal infections. Require meticulous hygiene.

Perfil anfíbio
- Dieta
- Insectivore
- The Granular glass frog is hunts small flies, mosquitoes, and other tiny invertebrates on vegetation. Providing a varied and appropriately sized food source is crucial for their health in captivity. Supplementation with calcium and multivitamins is highly recommended. Ensure fresh water is always available to aid digestion.
- Expectativa de vida
- 10-14 years
- Tamanho adulto
- 3 cm
- Estilo de vida/Microhabitat
- Arboreal
- As a riparian arboreal, requiring high humidity, air flow, and broad leaves. The terrarium must be tailored to these specific needs, prioritizing either vertical climbing space or horizontal floor space. Substrate and furnishings must replicate their natural habitat.
- Ciclo de atividades
- Nocturnal
- They are nocturnal, resting completely flattened against the underside of leaves by day. Lighting schedules should strictly mimic natural photoperiods to maintain their circadian rhythm. Disturbing them during their resting period can cause significant stress.
- Socialidade
- Solitary
- Behaviorally, they are territorial males will engage in wrestling matches over prime calling spots. Keepers should observe them regularly to ensure they are not displaying signs of stress. Providing adequate hiding spots allows them to feel secure.
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- In the wild, reproduction is males fiercely guard egg clutches laid on leaves overhanging fast-flowing streams. Replicating these seasonal cues in captivity can be challenging but is necessary for successful breeding. Raising the offspring requires dedicated space and resources.
- Toxicidade
- Harmless
- When it comes to toxicity, this species is completely non-toxic to humans and relies on transparency for camouflage. It is always best practice to wash hands before and after any interactions. This protects the frog from harmful oils and the keeper from potential irritation.
- Estágio de vida
- Metamorphosis
- Their development features tadpoles burrow into stream beds before emerging as translucent adults. Providing the correct environmental parameters at each stage is vital for proper growth. Adult specimens can be incredibly rewarding to keep.
- Tolerância de tratamento
- Display only
- Handling should be incredibly fragile; handling poses a severe risk of injury and should be avoided. Amphibians have delicate, permeable skin that is easily damaged by dry hands or chemicals. Whenever possible, observe them without direct physical contact.
- Brumação
- Não obrigatório
- Regarding brumation, this species tropical rainforest origin means brumation is completely unnecessary and harmful. It is important to research the exact temperature gradients required for your specific animal. Improper temperature drops can lead to severe health issues.
- Muda
- Periodic
- The molting process is fascinating; it sheds its thin skin quickly and consumes it to recycle valuable proteins. High humidity is necessary to ensure the shed comes off cleanly without restricting toes or limbs. Retained shed is a sign of improper husbandry.
