Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Inhabits the dense, humid montane and premontane rainforests of Central America and northwestern South America (from Honduras and Nicaragua south to Colombia and Ecuador). They live in lush vegetation and large leaves directly overhanging fast-flowing mountain streams.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Belongs to the Centrolenidae family (glass frogs). Exhibit a striking emerald green dorsum with small dark spots. The ventral skin is completely transparent (hyaline), revealing the beating heart, liver, and digestive tract. Listed under CITES and highly prized by experienced keepers.
Behavior and Habits: Nocturnal and arboreal. During the day, they rest in absolute camouflage on the undersides of wet leaves. At night, they become active hunters and climbers. Males are highly territorial, fighting intensely with rivals and calling with a metallic "tick" to attract females. Eggs are laid in gelatinous clutches on leaves overhanging water.
Morphology: A miniature species, adults measure 2.5–3.5 cm in length. Dorso-ventral coloration is similar, but males possess sharp, osseous humeral spurs on their upper arms used in territorial wrestling. Gravid females can easily be identified by the visible eggs inside their transparent bellies.
Cuidado, criação e companheiros de tanque
Terrarium Setup: Requires a tall, vertical arboreal terrarium (minimum 45x45x60 cm). Decorate with plenty of thin branches and large-leaved live plants (such as Philodendron, Monstera, and Anthurium) for sleeping sites. A shallow water area at the bottom mimicking a stream is highly beneficial.
Lighting and Heating: Prefer a daytime range of 25–27°C. High heat without ventilation is fatal; use air conditioning during hot summer months. Provide a night drop to 21–23°C. Low UVB (5%) is highly recommended to support calcium absorption and prevent metabolic bone disease.
Humidity and Hydration: Maintain high humidity of 80–90%. Excellent ventilation (using small fans if necessary) is mandatory to prevent stagnant air and skin diseases like Red Leg disease. Mist daily with reverse osmosis water.
Feeding and Supplementation: Strictly insectivorous. Feed small live insects such as fruit flies, pinhead crickets, and small roaches. Dust prey with high-quality calcium and vitamin D3 supplements three times a week.
Compatibility: Males are highly territorial. Do not house multiple males together in a small terrarium as they will fight and injure each other with their humeral spurs. Females can be kept together peacefully.
Health and Common Diseases: Extremely delicate. Never handle with bare hands; chemical residues, soap, and skin oils can cause rapid poisoning. Provide a quiet, stress-free environment to prevent impact injuries from panicky jumps against the glass.

Perfil anfíbio
- Dieta
- Insectivore
- The Emerald glass frog is specializes in small flying and crawling insects found on riverside vegetation. Providing a varied and appropriately sized food source is crucial for their health in captivity. Supplementation with calcium and multivitamins is highly recommended. Ensure fresh water is always available to aid digestion.
- Expectativa de vida
- 4-5 years
- Tamanho adulto
- 3.1 cm
- Estilo de vida/Microhabitat
- Arboreal
- As a arboreal near streams, needing excellent ventilation and constant moisture. The terrarium must be tailored to these specific needs, prioritizing either vertical climbing space or horizontal floor space. Substrate and furnishings must replicate their natural habitat.
- Ciclo de atividades
- Nocturnal
- They are nocturnal and active primarily during high humidity or rain events. Lighting schedules should strictly mimic natural photoperiods to maintain their circadian rhythm. Disturbing them during their resting period can cause significant stress.
- Socialidade
- Solitary
- Behaviorally, they are highly territorial for a small frog, aggressively defending their chosen leaves. Keepers should observe them regularly to ensure they are not displaying signs of stress. Providing adequate hiding spots allows them to feel secure.
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- In the wild, reproduction is males possess bony hooks on their arms used for fighting rivals during breeding season. Replicating these seasonal cues in captivity can be challenging but is necessary for successful breeding. Raising the offspring requires dedicated space and resources.
- Toxicidade
- Harmless
- When it comes to toxicity, this species is non-toxic, utilizing its transparent underside to blend into leafy backgrounds. It is always best practice to wash hands before and after any interactions. This protects the frog from harmful oils and the keeper from potential irritation.
- Estágio de vida
- Metamorphosis
- Their development features develops from stream-dwelling tadpoles into small adults with visible internal organs. Providing the correct environmental parameters at each stage is vital for proper growth. Adult specimens can be incredibly rewarding to keep.
- Tolerância de tratamento
- Display only
- Handling should be handling is extremely dangerous to their delicate limbs and permeable skin. Amphibians have delicate, permeable skin that is easily damaged by dry hands or chemicals. Whenever possible, observe them without direct physical contact.
- Brumação
- Não obrigatório
- Regarding brumation, this species requires consistently warm and humid conditions year-round without brumation. It is important to research the exact temperature gradients required for your specific animal. Improper temperature drops can lead to severe health issues.
- Muda
- Periodic
- The molting process is fascinating; it sheds skin frequently, pulling it off with its legs and eating it. High humidity is necessary to ensure the shed comes off cleanly without restricting toes or limbs. Retained shed is a sign of improper husbandry.
